Dynamic Handling in Portland Oregon
Cross posting from the ordering forum -- BMW is buying our F30 back, so we are reordering. I am on the fence about ordering the dynamic handling package. Does anybody have it that would let me drive it a few blocks on our terrible streets? I'm leaning toward the sport line this time but am afraid that the ride will be harsh on potholes and speed bumps.

I can't offer you a test drive because I don't have the right car. But here is one opinion: the adjustable shocks are, as much as anything, BMW's response to the poor quality of US roads. I had two ZSP-equipped cars: an E39 and an E92. Both were vulnerable to tire, wheel and suspension damage. If I were getting a new F30, I would not hesitate for a moment to take the DHP, at $1,000, over the sport suspension setup.

I LOVE DHP. Comfort mode is great for our crappy 3rd world roads in PA. It doesn't feel soft or bouncy at all to me, but it absorbs the bad roads pretty well. Sport is great for when I want to feel really tight in the corners. Couple that with the different steering inputs and throttle responses and that's 2 (good) cars in one. Also get the 18 inch wheels! I'm pretty sure the added tire sidewall helps a lot.

I found one F30 x335i with DHP in Salem. None in Portland, Eugene, Tacoma, or Bend.
I also note that the dealers have stocked up on 320s and 328d cars. 335s sure seem rare! I also see from the E9X forums that people have trouble with the sensors and the wiring to the sensors. But not from leaking fluid. A friend of mine is a master tech at Lexus and says that he sees a fair number of cars with leaky dampers at about 8 years old. They're so expensive to replace that many people opt to get passive suspension installed in their cars at that time. I'm not leasing, so I'd really REALLY have to like it in order to keep it long term with the added maintenance cost. That said, I opted for robot cruise control on my first F30 and would do so again in a heartbeat. It really helps with the daily commute. |
