335d woes.
Gutted.....
Whilst driving my new 335d today (12 days old), I noticed an electric-type burning smell coming from the engine. When I stopped there was (a small amount) of smoke coming from the left side of the engine - as you look at it from the front. Couldn't see any obvious cause. In addition, the fan was going all-out for at least ten mins after the engine was turned off, which I haven't noticed before. The engine oil temp was normal at all times. Called BMW who sent a recovery guy. He looked at it and could find nothing but has taken my baby away for BMW to look at tomorrow. BMW have been excellent, apart from the Hyundai i40 I have as a replacement. Any similar stories? Any ideas? I think its a wire or piece of plastic that has melted/burned through incorrect contact with engine/heat shields. In any case, I'm glad it's off to BMW for them to check over. |

Could the burning smell be from the new bakes instead of the engine ? And the fan running could be the DPF doing its thing ? My friend has had both of these things on his 335d.

Sounds like the DPF, I havn't noticed this on my 330 but I've seen this discussed before, fans running for 10 to 15 mins and burning smells, seems to occur if you do a lot of short journeys.

I had this on my new E92 335d as it happens, and noticed the smoke whilst filling it with fuel at a services!
Put it down to new materials heating up, never an issue after.

Quick call from the dealer. O ring sealing incorrectly. Oil dripping onto exhaust. Very apologetic.
To say I'm annoyed would be a mild understatement. My first BMW. I think I'll lay it on thick if I can get down to pick it up tomorrow. |

I have something similar. See another post about burning smell...
I've only done approx 800 miles in my new car, the 335d xdrive and just beginning to give it some welly. On 2 or 3 occasions now I thought I had a burning smell from the drivers side of the engine bay. I did smell similar when I picked it up from the dealer 4 weeks ago but I put that down to the car being new. I lifted the bonnet and couldn't see anything wrong. Coolent levels OK, Oil levels OK. This week I also felt the car was maybe down on low end power. Its maybe just my imagination after the burning smell etc., but I thought that the low down power just wasn't there. Or maybe its me just getting used to it ? I'm in two minds whether the smell is just the DPF like some other posts say and is normal, or if I should contact the dealer :-( |

They prob rushing the cars out from the factory (ie QA not as good?) as the order books are full at the minute with all these deals. No burning smell from mine (yet!)

Mine has been grand since I got it back. The dealership were very good, and shared my annoyance with BMW. They're paying for dinner! I haven't heard from BMW themselves yet but I'm told that I will. Wonder if they will offer anything by way of apology.
If you're worried, I'd take it in and get them to give it the once over. Although I actually had some smoke coming from the engine, I'd have let them look at it just with the smell. Hope you get sorted. |

Weird?!
Have noticed a hot smell a couple of times on my 335D. Will try to investigate tomorrow as I have a 300 mile drive.
Tomorrow us will take me to 4K miles in two months. The car just makes me want to drive and drive though I am struggling to maintain 40 mpg. May give up on this aim (pretty stupid anyway) |
