Reduced Performance after Limp Mode

I don't know if I am being paranoid but ever since my car engaged in limp mode 2 days ago it seems that it is not driving as smoothly. Symptoms were there: radiator fan on max the whole trip, no revving past 3k rpm, and really low oil temp.

Maybe I am just nit picking since its basically a new car (got it with a few hundred over 5k miles now 6k miles), but it seems like its just not as powerful as it was days ago. In stop and go traffic and picking up speed something seems a little off. Don't know how to explain it.

I went to the dealer today and explained the situation to my SA and he basically said limp mode is usual with turbo cars and that I shouldn't worry about it if no CELs or lights showed up on the dash. He said its most likely fine and that I should bring it in if it shows up again.

If it went into limp mode, there are almost certainly stored codes. The dealer would have had to charge you ($125-$150) to read them. Get them read for free by an auto-parts shop (Kelly's, Autozone, etc.), then ask here again.

If your dealer is charging you to run codes, then you need a new dealer.

Mine does as well. I believe a couple of other members mentioned this as well.

Your SA is full of crap - limp mode is NOT "usual" with turbocharged engines - it only happens if something isn't working correctly. You may have a defective auxiliary cooling fan (located behind lower driver-side grille) like mine did - although mine never went into limp mode. In normal and even spirited driving, you should never go into limp mode unless something fails - generally, it's either the oil, engine coolant, or intake air temp going beyond safe levels. If you're running a "tune" other than the factory MPPK, its possible that it may be pushing the limits too far and causing the DME to protect the engine from potential damage.

Your car is under warranty, and bringing it in to check for codes should not cost you anything - if they claim it does, then speak to the service manager or the dealership manager and complain.

I think its just you being more careful...I have had limp mode 6 times...the last 2 times the car got all jerky on me as I was down gearing(basically drive my car in manual all the time) I do remember in the days after I was just being a little more careful. I was thinking last night, damn ive been dogging this car for the last few days, glad no limpies! If its gonna happen its gonna happen...ive had it anywhere from being stopped at a stop sign and starting to move, to cruising on the highway for hours...its a software error.

Guys, my SA never said it costs money to check codes

I decided last night I'm going to take it in though because I don't think this should be happening...going to get that stupid auto start/stop feature disabled too

Of COURSE it's not normal and shouldn't be happening. That is why everyone is saying you need a new dealer man....

Question is, go to another dealer (Long Beach or Nick Alexander) or take it up with the service manager?

At the end of the day the dealer is going to defer to the BMW area rep as to the remediation. So might as well pound on the most convenient location if you're otherwise happy.

It could be any number of things .mine was a bad air mass sensor with no codes or lights showing but a noticeable lag in power. Find a new dealer and make them tear the drive train apart until they find it. If they can't fix it its a lemon.

Your Stealer is BS'ing you. If your car went into limp mode codes will be stored in ECU. Talk to the service manager or find a new dealer.

I talked to the service manager at the dealer I've been frequenting (South Bay bmw) and she wants to set up a drive in with one of the service guys. She said the earliest is next Tuesday as they don't have any loaners.

I'm afraid they aren't going to find anything by just sitting in the car--is it time to just take it to another dealer?

OP, sounds like you have not seen this thread.

But i know the feeling you are talking about after limp mode.

The car feels like the turbo stopped working when you drive it the next day.

Give it a few days, it will feel normal again.

So I was right...took it into the dealer yesterday and just like expected they found some fault codes associated with the auxiliary fan. They are contacting PUMA right now...
