Power rear shade and side shades
I am wondering if I can retrofit the power rear shade and side shades to my 330i. Anyone has done this before? What is the cost that I am looking at? Any part numbers that I needed for this retrofit?
Thanks |

Doubtful. Anything can be done at a price - but this would be cost prohibitave.

The shades are built into the doors for the side, and into the rear window shelf for the rear... this would be extensive work. Then you'd have to run wiring for the button you would have to install for the rear shade... all in all not worth the effort. The $500 factory option would cost you many times that much - if it were even feasible.

Right, the ones on the sides are manual. I shouldn't be speaking because my car hasn't arrived yet. However, having removed door panels on many cars before, I imagine you can order this part from your local BMW dealership. Not sure if you may have to order the entire panel plus the clips that the shades fasten onto at top.

Mine has the power sunshade. It works like a charm. I can turn it up/down whenever I want. If I don't like to see the guy behind me, I turn it up. When I see a hot babe, I will turn it down, just to show that my car has this nice feature. Maybe the babe will dig me I would say this is way better than tint.

I just got rid of the new Jetta which had a manual rear shade. Maybe you could work that into your car, it would not be powered of course, but just an idea.

On my old 2003 A4, the door panel ended up being two parts (probably for ease of manufacturing so that when rear shades were ordered they only had to change the top half of the door panel) and it was easy to retrofit those. Only about $200-250. The power rear shade however was ghastly expensive.
You might check out realoem.com to come up with part drawings and part #'s to see if it's doable. If the whole panel has to be changed out that might be expensive. I might check into this too, my wife is bugging me about the side shades for our little one. |

Just went and looked at realoem ... retail prices are astronomical, but who knows, it might be okay if you can get them wholesale. Power rear shade retails for $498 and then you need a new parcel shelf for $100. I'm sure it's prewired, but then you've got to figure out the dash button. Get ready, because that's actually the cheapest part.
It does appear you'll need entirely new rear door panels. Retail price for the leather door panels are $700 each. Half that if you have 'ette. No pricing listed for the actual shade, but I can't imagine that's too much. Well, compared to the door panels anyway. Doesn't look like I'll be doing this unless I happen upon a wrecker yard with an e90 that has them (more chance of winning the lottery probably). Or if I can get the panels for a lot cheaper, like $200 a piece cheap. |

I have the power sunshade and I would strongly recommend just getting tints. I sunshade is just okay. It's so-so for keeping the sun out of my son's eyes and does next to nothing for keeping heat out. The sunshade is more of toy for my son (3 1/2 years old) who likes to put the sunshade up on the sides before we start driving and take them down when we park. For keeping the sun out of his eyes, I'd say on a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give it 5.

Thanks so much! You guys are very helpful. Yes, I understand tinting the windows are much more cheaper but the problem is we can't have our windows tinted because it's the law!. So for the power rear shade, I will need the shade and a new parcel shelf? It's very common for Mercedes owners to retrofit any option they like and a guy called Steve from The Netherlands can basically come to your country (Of course you have to pay for his travel expense) and install anything such as: Power rear shade, The whole navigation system, OEM park sensors, power folding mirrors, voice recognition, TV tuner etc....
