How is cargo space and how is it really measured?
Hi, I currently have F10 528. 2 kids age 8 and 6. For my next car I want more rear legroom b/c I am tall (6'4") and the person behind me always suffers. 3 wagon won't cut it b/c I don't like the rear legroom and I seen the 3GT in person and the rear legroom does look like more then my 5 series. But I do really like the trunk space in the 5.
My question is does anyone know how they measure the cargo volume in the trunk of the GT. I believe it says 520l so does that gets measured up from the bottom to the top of the roof line/rear hatch window in the rear or does it only get measured from the bottom to the top of the removeble lid in place. I really like the 3 GT so far but did not get an opportunity to see the rear trunk b/c the car at the dealership was still hoisted up a little bit. Also, for those who have it how have you found the cargo room in the back. I really don't like the X3 or X5 so this is my only option. I wished they had 5 wagons in North America. But coming from 3 different 3 series I do find them way more fun to drive then the 5. Thank you! |

Believe the official BMW spec is for unobstructed rearward view, seats up. 480 for F30, 495 for F31, 520 for F34. Best way to compare is to take the stuff that you often carry which needs the space like suitcases and such and compare back to back. This is what sold us more than anything on the utility of the GT vs F31 and F10. Doesn't hurt that it's nicer to drive than F10
The flexibility of a hatchback should not be ignored either. You can get all manner of silly big objects in hatchbacks that would never fit through the opening in a sedan trunk no matter how big the sedan is Front headroom is good thanks to the shape of the roof even with the sunroof I have more room than my sunroofless E90. You might not need to recline as much Last edited by Richbot; 10-30-2013 at 02:38 PM.. |

Can't comment on actual cargo clume numbers but I am also tall (6'6") and thought I'd share my experience.
I was very close to buying a 550i and rear seat leg room is always a concern for me. When I did a side by side comparison between a 550i and the F30, I found the F30 had much better rear leg room after I set both seats to my liking. The 550i multi-contour seats are very thick compared to the F30 seats. The front seat almost touched the back seat in the 5 series while in the 3 series I actually can sit behind myself with relative comfort. I'd have to assume the 3GT would offer even more rear legroom compared to a 5 series with multi-contour seats. |

Thanks for the info. If it gets me at least the same cargo space with unobstructed view like you say and it has better rear leg room and its funner to drive then its the best BMW for my lifestyle now. Plus I always had a thing for hatchbacks!
Thanks again. |
