I agree. The dealer recommends 18's for my 2013 535 XDrive MSport.

Probably, but I'm looking for a balance of handling and stopping. I'm not too concerned about traction in deep snow. If the snow is too deep, I"ll have to wait for the plows as the lower chin on my M Sport will be shoveling it. In any other circumstance, I'm sure traction with the X Drive won't be a problem, regardless of which tire size I put on.
When I checked with the dealer, they were recommending 225 45/18's for the 5 series. They did have 17's available as well though, so maybe you'll find a buyer here.
