This is what a doomed N55 Sounds Like
I've had this weird noise in my F30 since the day I bought it new. Turns out it was a bad connecting rod bearing. After multiple visits to the dealer with a "could not duplicate" diagnosis, they finally troubleshot it in earnest and found excessive wear in one of the cylinders. I'm not happy about the situation. I was rather hoping it would have been a broken bell housing bolt or an exhaust component.
Edit/Update: it wasn't the engine. After the complete engine replacement, I hear this under moderate engine load at cold start, but only intermittently. It sounds like a goat in the engine bay. Last edited by gomichaelkgo; 11-16-2013 at 08:18 AM.. Reason: Wasn't the engine |

can barely hear it on vid. Must sound brutal live. That would be th episton slapping the cylinder i guess. They will probably give you new short block if walls are scored badly .

Eww, throwing a rod bearing so soon? Any ideas why?

You can hear it best at 0:05. Sorry for the poor audio -- it was an intermittent sound and definitely audible. I had to resort to whipping out the phone to catch it. They're replacing the entire engine assembly.

It came bad from the factory. I heard it the second time I turned the car on. In retrospect, I should have hounded the dealer about it harder from the start. I kept hoping it would go away after the break-in period.

Holy sh1t. This is exactly the sound I have been complaining about right from the beginning. It is like a "click click" sound coming from the engine when you try to accelerate modestly (without making engine speed too high) at slow speed.
It is almost impossible to replicate this issue since it happens mostly on a cold engine for me. What is the fix for this issue? New engine??? |

Damn. That's the exact wierd noise my car has been making since new. Figured it was just some sort of engine heat shield vibrating. Gotta be kiddin me. It feels fine though. Just another thing I need to try and have them fix.

wow 0:05 does not sound good! How did the dealer diagnose that one cylinder has excessive wear? Maybe a compression test? Mine is N26, it has some wierd sound during acceleration, but it is more like a whirlwind noise than a knocking one like your video. The tech said it is normal turbo spinning sound.

How long have you had the car and how many miles does it have on it? I would definitely try to do a vehicle buy-back and get a new BMW. Having the engine replaced so early is not good and will likely kill the resale value (unless it's a lease).

Seems like a fair amount of forum members with F30 335i experienced this noise too in their own car; how likely that all our engines have a bad connecting rod bearing? T_T Last edited by henryeeex; 10-18-2013 at 01:49 AM.. |

I'm taking my car back to the shop. How many of you facing this sound have experienced this clicking engine sound only during the first 5 minutes from a cold start?

I experience a clicking noise all the time, but not sure where it comes from. Before work in the AM I'll pop the hood and check the origin.

Direct injection also ticks as a result of turning on and off the fuel. The fuel is highly pressurized with DI. The 328 is much worse than the 335 in this regard. This is less an issue when the engine is warm.
Very few will have a failing bearing and are probably hearing other, perfectly normal, noises. |

even when the engine is fully warmed and been driven for hours. Only when the gas pedal is pressed...
