Hill Assist
is the hill assist controlled by the car's electronic system. I have my CCC replaced last week and car got updated with CIP 19.1. The other day I noticed that the car no longer prevents me from rolling back when I am on an incline.

I think you may want to get your hill assist checked out before too long.

I believe that as part of the Continental braking system, hill assist would never be deliberately switched off unless it has a problem. In my opinion BMW would cite safety issue as a reason for not disabling a fully functioning syatem. I find it a bit of a novelty that although it is really not helpful (against rolling back) in my car being the Steptronic, it would be great for manual transmission drivers, especially if you have someone close behind you as an example.

Given I have driven a manual car for 17 years, dont care about that feature. It feels wierd when the car is not rolling back. After a while, you lose that touch (being able to start on a hill with min roll) when you switch to a non-hill assist car. Also it means the emergency brake has to be adjusted a lot sooner (maintenance $$$ down the road)

As a manual driver living in a hilly area, I think it is a godsend. I am perfectly capable of doing the hot shoe shuffle and not rolling back, but it is nice to have this taken care of for me.
Some thoughts on the real benefits, IMO: With this feature, you can get off the line quicker because the brakes are stopping the car from developing any backward interia which must be overcome before you can start moving forwards. I think that in the long run it will protect the clutch because it won't have been prematurely worn by the stress of unassisted hill starts.

I'm pretty sure it doesnt use the emergency brake and rather the actual disk brakes. I do miss the feeling of the car rolling back, but I usually dont do this since most of the time its done by people that either cant drive a manual without doing this or kids trying to show off that they have a manual.

__________________________________________________ __I agree with Jamie. I have been driving manual transmission vehicles for eons and I like the feature though BMW made it more complex than necessary. This feature was first developed, to the best of my knowlege, during the 1930s and fell out of favor since so few people considered it enough of a benefit to justify the cost of inclusion. Stated differently, it wasn't selling cars. A modern version of the original simple system is offered on some Subaru models and works like a charm. |

Hill climb assist is pretty cool, it takes some time getting used to though.
