here we go again.
i bet you have the high performance summers still on. If not, all season tires, in RWD or FWD cars will still slip and slide in winter as well. Esp. during storms such as that which you guys got. Winter tire and easy on the gas pedal works every time, for ANY type of drive train. I come from an Audi background so I was expecting to be shocked, but I am actually quite pleased with my car's winter performance. I do not have unrealistic expectations however. It will slip (just like fronties slip as well), and I do not get the acceleration grip that AWD gave me. But that's OK. Braking and turning I have not seen any difference with the Audi yet. And the Audi used to get me in trouble bcs I admit that I was going perhaps 5-10 miles faster than the weather permitted at any given time just because the acceleration grip was there initially. |

I feel your pain, my beemer friend. It's the price we pay to look stylin' in the summer. I guess you need to invest in at least all seasons as was advised to me.

I just came on the board to say HOW HAPPY I AM WITH MY CAR'S PERFORMANCE IN THE SNOW!!! Of course, I have installed winter tires (Dunlop M3). I couldn't be happier with my car's perfomance.
I knew from day one (my salesman told me) that my sports tires won't work in the snow and that I would need snow tires.

Re-post - snow tires!
Great to hear that everyone is having good success with their RWD E90's on snow tires. I'm awaiting my 330i with SP and manual trans... supposed to be here in late December. My Dunlop M3 wintersports on 17" alloys from the tire rack are already waiting at the dealer.
Thought I might give my views on AWD and snow tires. Here in Ontario, Canada, snow is obviously a common event. I commute about 50 kms to and from the hospital daily and have been driving a discretely modified Subaru WRX for the past 4 years. I have been running non runflat Dunlop M3's in the winter for the past 2 seasons. Recently got caught out in the 1st storm of the season 3 weeks ago with my summer Goodyear Eagle F1 tires... let me tell you that even a very good AWD system such as the WRX's is USELESS without appropriate rubber. My commute home was terrifying to say the least! I'm back on my winter rubber now and the difference is NIGHT and DAY. I also had all-seasons on the car for the first 2 years and they really were not great in the snow, despite the AWD. Hence, I honestly believe that appropriate snow tires are without a doubt the MOST IMPORTANT issue in winter driving... not the AWD. Don't get me wrong, an AWD car WITH snowtires is almost unstoppable but if the debate is AWD with summer or even allseasons versus RWD with snows... the latter will be safer and easier to drive in the winter. I'll post my own Canadian 330i winter experience once I have my new baby. Cheers from the Great White North |

Winter Tires
You should get a set of winter tires quickly if you have the sport tires on. It is absurd to think that a "summer tire" will provide any traction in snow, sleet, slush. I took off my 162 sport 18"wheels with the summer tires and threw on 17" winter wheels and M3DSST Run Flats from Tirerack for under $1100. I havent had any problems in the recent snow. The car handles much better than I thought it would. Who needs an XI!!

my winter wheels are going on next week (as soon as teh snow melts and i can move my car...). along with the winters does anyone here recommend i put more weight in the back of the car? i know people with trucks do it b/c of the weight ratio, but is there any added benefit for us to have more weight in the back (a couple bags of salt or something)? or is our 50/50 ratio going to give us the best snow performance (along with winter tires of course)?
