Diesel

How many of you here in the US are getting the 328d/xd model variants? How do you like them? Am still waiting for my 328d to get in - my first diesel. And of course like everyone else says, it's in EBII with Premium, Technology, Driver's Assistance, Lighting, Cold Weather packages, and a few other things. Can't wait! And can't wait to enjoy the 45mpg cruising ranges (am currently in a 19mpg vehicle).

Good choice!
Looks diesel cars still not so popular in US. I try to find some front brake's pads, but there is no any diesel versions of f3x listed.

45mpg sounds like 72kms with 3.87 litres fuel. The real average consumption (for 25000km ) of 5.7 litres per 100kms I have.

I'm contemplating diesel as well, although my first choice was a X1 with the 2.0 sdrive. I guess I'm real hesitant about the diesel. Lots of reports of catastrophic engine failures due to time chain breaks. Apparenly affected mostly 07 to 09 models. Some sporadic reports of timing chain noise in later years as well, but no breaks.

Anyone know of what fix if any BMW has done for later model year engines?

Scanning through realoem.com, it looks like they made changes to the intake chain, guide rail and tensioner in April and August of 2013. I had not been aware of these reports earlier (which appear to be beyond 2009) - scary.

Interesting that the cam chain is at the back of the motor rather than front...

We had a 320d when we lived in Germany and loved it (back in 06). I'd think about a diesel here but it's really hard to find a gas station where I live that has diesel (Seattle burbs).

Really? They're at every other gas station now in the north Philadelphia suburbs.

Don't know where your are, but I have no problem at all finding diesel in Burien, Kent, Maple Valley, North Bend, Enumclaw, Issaquah, Renton, even Sammamish plateau. I'm sure that I could find diesel wherever you are. Most stations have at least 1 pump/island with diesel - perhaps you're looking at one island and not noticing that the next has diesel?

Well, I bought my diesel 328d today! Saphire black, beige interior. Has the drivers assist package, nav, moonroof, and heated seats. It was a dealer specced car and they didn't have much in packages, but alot of options ordered. I'm pumped. I'll take delivery tomorrow after they've prepped the car. They also have to install a satellite radio module and program the car for sat radio.

I couldn't make up my mind between the diesel or a minimially specced X1 that was much cheaper than the 328. After a test drive my wife was convinced, 'buy the diesel'!!

X1 you can't compare with 3rd serie.

Sounds like you buy demo car or ordered for stock availabilities from the dealer.

For demo car you can push for serios price cutting (tipically they have a quota from BMW AG for demo cars on lower price then ussually!

Bought from dealer stock, not a demo car. It had about 40 miles on it.

I had a 1999 323i for 11 years and loved it. I'm currently driving an 2010 Audi A3 TDI - nice car, but I just don't have that same love for it. The diesel engine is excellent. For my daily driving the mileage averages 36mpg, and mid 40's on the highway.

I test drove a 328xd and very impressed with the engine's smoothness and power; faster than my A3 and a larger car.

I did a European Delivery in 2011 and picked up a friends 128i - OMG was that trip a blast! I'll be ordering a 328xd with all the bells and whistles; another ED for May 2014. I'm pretty excited.

That's definitely possible. Since I'm not currently driving a diesel maybe I'm not looking hard enough. I mostly get gas in Covington or North Bend (we always use Safeway/Fred Meyer reward points to make it a smidge cheaper)
