Engine real sound comparison (no trick)

A comparison of M3 generations engine sound :

F82 M4
Bmw M4 spy video.mp3

NA V8 M3 (compilation of stock and some aftermarket exhaust)
Car2.mp3

I6 E46 M3
BMW M3 e46.mp3

I6 E36 M3
M3 e36.mp3

E30 4cyl M3
BMW E30.mp3

un-named: high revving V8 with TT. Can you guess ?
Car1.mp3

The sounds speak for themselves but here is my appreciation:

M4 sound --> turbo noises drowning-out and smoothing the engine and exhaust notes. Car just sounds lame. Kind of a sleepy night owl sound.

V8 M3 sound --> V8 grunt, gets better the higher you rev it, solid harmonics, glorious noise

E46: gutural sound, metallic rasp.

E36:

E30:

the last car: Savage. Feral. Vicious. I love it. "Best noise known to man other than a girl moaning!!".

Strange that the OP chooses the S65 as the best sounding and, what a coincidence, he also owns a E92 M3...

And your comparison is somewhat inconsistent... E46 and E36 is sound from cabin, E9x and F8x is outside at two different tracks/corners...

Strange that so many E9x M3 owners feel the need to justify that they have a "better" car than the next gen...

i am pretty sure everyone who owns a e92 including my self, knows the new M4 is a "better" car in terms of performance.

we are talking about engine sound right ? i mean a 1970s muscle car can sound better than a 2011 mustang gt right ?

I lease my cars through my business. My lease is up right when the new M4 comes out next year. I'm always on the look out for the next vehicle.

And I don't like the overall sound of the F8x as much as the E9x or the E46. Having an E92 M3 means nothing to me. I'm over two years into this car and already looking forward to something else.

Of course I liked the sound of my previous C63 the best but that car certainly wasn't perfect either.

My preference is just that. Putting these sound samples next to each other, people are more than capable to decide what's best for their ears. thank you.

The cabin "reproduced" engine sound in the F8x is better for comparison, right

I think it is not about being better as each gen M3 had a different set of goals and is designed to meet these goals. Marketing is trying to shift perception of what makes a good M3. True engine sound is not easily put under the rug.

The F8x has some fantastic updates/attributes over prior M cars but I don't think its sound will be among those for many people.

LOL another e9x owner.. go figure
enjoy "glorious" v8 sound while getting spanked by 2014 base mustang gt. sometimes sound needs justification with real balls of grunt.

This isn't a fair comparison. If you want to compare, you need to have the same environment for all the cars. In cabin sounds will obviously differ from outside sounds, as such, this isn't a comparison as much as it is various sounds emitted by various M3's.

when the e92 M3 came out it was king. the 5.0L mustang came out in a 2011 model.

a GT does not spank a m3. they are more of par if anything. get your info straight...

mark my words the next gen mustang will be just as fast as the F80 m3. its a new trend i see coming. they are making fast and cheap cars. mustangs GT, GT500, boss etc

corvette, mustangs etc are beast now of days. if you want a luxury car with good performance. you get a M car. not to be faster than vettes, and mustangs

I just thought that the title of your thread was inconsistent with the content. It's not "real sound" nor "no trick" as we have different recording equipment and even outside vs inside sound comparisons...

In fact the title should read "Inconsistent comparison of non comparable sounds (not remotely realistic and tricked so that the E9x M3 comes out with the best sound)"

The E36 M3 clip is dead-on accurate from inside the car with windows open. It sounds almost exactly like mine on track.

Strange that someone who owns a F10 5 series fills the need to justify that they have the "better" car.

We all know which car sounds better. You don't need to own one to be able to hear the difference.

Oh and before you blast me, I don't own one yet, I take delivery in a month from now.

Honestly I think that last one sounds horrible. Way too high pitched and choppy. It might be the best for getting attention but if I were actually driving that thing it would drive me crazy. From these samples the E30 and E36 sound the best.
