You should, unless you are Catless.

Everything is stock, the only mod I have is the jb4. I didn't pass smog and don't know why. I did change the map to 0 which is off if I'm correct. Here's what the paper said: "This vehicle did not pass the OBD System Check because its OBD system was not ready to test". Can someone help me out?

You need to drive your car in Map 0 with autoclear off. The car needs to heat cycle 4-5 times and be driven around 80-100 miles so that the O2 sensors will be tested and ready before re-smog-ing.

Oh I see. So from now until I get my car re-smog again, I should be driving it in Map 0 with autoclear off for 80-100 miles? This should fix the problem and let me pass smog?

You need to go through enough "drive cycles" for the OBDII scan to show readiness.

"drive cycles" meaning car needs to warm up completely then cool down and repeat. If you drive for a week with the car then go test everything will be good. No autoclear as I stated previously.

Thanks. I'll do this and hopefully this works out!

Disabled auto code clear first then went to Map 0 yesterday. Will probably get the car smogged again later this week.

just curious...how can we pass smog (california) if we went catless downpipe?
Is it better to just pay somebody off?

If you are on the stock exhaust, put a o2 sensor fix in and you should be able to pass the sniffer. If they dont have a sniffer where you are testing then you will be fine. Otherwise, pay a guy to pass it or swap your dp's out for a few days.

If I am not mistaken, a "drive cycle" is not just simply letting it warm up and cool down. It's a series of events (depending on the manufacturer the number of events) such as "idling for x amount of seconds" which would just be accomplished at a stop light. And cruising between 25-30 mph for 15 seconds which is usually done on city streets and stuff of that nature... Feel free to correct me but that's what I think of when I hear or see "drive cycle"

When I owned an RX-8 I was catless and probably 2-3 days before I changed over to stock cat and stock map and reset the DTC for the drive cycles to be completed in time for the smog. Also depending on who you know, or don't know.. I'd rather swap cat on than pay somebody, I was quoted like 200 bucks.. Swap didn't take 200bucks worth of labor, so definitely worth just changing over.

nope, we are in the best State of the emission king, that's why i stayed away from DP and it's been a hassle either find someone to smog it or swap out DP. unless all the stations start doing the OBDII test soon, then DP wouldn't be a problem

I'm not sure about idling but the smog guy told me last time when my readiness wasn't set properly because i had just gotten the battery recall done, that i needed to drive for a few days and put around 150 miles on it to pass readiness.

I would definitely swap the stock one back on but damn...I don't have the time to do that and it's like 3-4 hour job. I'll just do the JB4 and be done with it....

Just did smog last week, down pipes and jb4, map 0, 40% E85, Downpipe fix, and had to get her SUPER hot, like 45 minutes of canyon racing, failed first time, had to heat it up so more.

I'm having the same exact issue as you, did this work for you? I'm totally stock, no modifications at all. I failed once, drove the car for 2+ weeks (regular driving), and failed again today. I had a CEL about a month ago (Dec 4.) and had the injectors replaced. No CEL since Dec. 4, and have put about 1000 miles of regular driving on the car between then and failing smog again today.

Can you tell me how you drove the car prior to taking it in?

This is interesting... was this the same day? Like you went in and failed, took it on a 45 minute canyon run, went back and passed?

This has been frustrating me. After I failed the first time, the smog tech told me I just needed to put a few miles on it and re-test. Have driven it every day for 2 weeks and put several hundred miles on it, but still failed a second time.

Yeah basically got her super hot and ran it right onto the track where the guy plugged it in instantly, I've probably never felt my hood that hot.

I did what deadmn1337 said and it worked. However, you're totally stock so I wouldn't know. Pretty sure everyone else on here can help you out.

If it's truly STOCK, there's no reason why you shouldn't pass smog unless there is a specific emissions problem.

So, FWIW I think you should just "bite the bullet" and take the car to the dealer or a qualified BMW service shop to diagnose and fix the problem.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Update: Got it to pass. Took it to the dealership to have the checked it out, turns it was a reading from the post cat O2 sensor due to a tiny exhaust leak. Just needed to tighten the exhaust and reset the bank one sensor. Took it right from the dealer to the smog shop and it passed with flying colors. Just an FYI if this happens to anyone that's stock.

Oh and from what the dealership told me, there's apparently no charge in CA for emission-related work. I assume this is based off of the model year, any modifications, etc., but I paid nothing at the dealership.
