Xenon HID too bright?
Hi all,
Over the weekend I drove back to my parents who live out in the sticks. I also tried out my high beam assist; in London it's not much use, only got flashed twice but I was very impressed. Anyway onto the reason why I posted. On my drive to the parents, twice I was chased by cars whom I overtook; both cars lit up their high beams as soon as I passed them, with the kids in the car asleep I was not particular happy Not once I did have my high beams on or tailgating them....not until they started to hitting the breaks and we were moving at low speeds Question is, are the Xenon's too bright? I've never had an issue in London. Last edited by kitster; 09-23-2013 at 02:44 AM.. |

They could have just been clowns fancying a race. You never know. I went for a little run around Derbyshire with a mate the other Saturday night and spent most of it on unlit roads following his M3. I was using HBA and he was amazed that I'd had full beam on most of the time. He certainly didn't get dazzled.

I always use High Beam Assist whenever it's dark enough and I've never once been flashed. Clearly generates interest what with the beam dancing left and right, tunnels being made for other cars and the high beam operated individually.
So needless to say, I've never been flashed on dipped either.

That should be irrelevant, my car is early 2012 and has this feature. In fact, I think I was the first to point out to Bimmerpost that this is a completely new type of intelligent High Beam Assist as it was not marketed by BMW at all. In fact, the F30 was the first BMW to bring this technology to the road, followed by the F01/F02 LCI. The first thread and video demonstration I did of it actually made it onto the Bimmerpost homepage!
It took me almost a year to fully learn the system and its capabilities. I, like you, figured it was just turning them on and off and doing so at the wrong time. Noticed it was doing them individually, then just started noting all of its behaviours, which absolutely blew me away - it's such an amazing, astounding feature - definitely my favorite on the car. If you have Visibility Package, you have HBA that should operate like this. My advice is, just trust it. No matter what it does, even if it seems like it's blinding other drivers, just trust it and watch carefully exactly what it does. But actually, if it is just blinding other drivers, turn it off and dealership!!

It's a 14 car, 2 weeks old. Pretty sure it's not doing the while thing. I'll keep an eye on it as the nights draw in and take it to the dealer if it doesn't look right.
Thanks! |

Lightly foggy/misty early mornings like today are great - you can really see it doing its party trick! The only two times I have to go manual are on bypass/mway where it doesn't detect lorry top lights and when it rains heavily.

Woah! Got the opportunity to try my clever headlights again today. I can only assume the rain affected their effectiveness last time because this time, they were FANTASTIC! Big smile in my face as they danced around traffic.
So I wonder if the rain causes the camera problems? |

I have noticed a few opposite flashes from on coming motors during wet weather conditions. Not paid much attention though, as on dual carriageway.
I have found that the adaptive lights can be a bit hesitant when first used though. Takes a few minutes, better when total darkness though. Still execellent though on these motors if you want this opition. |

This occurred until Audi replaced the lights to fit LED DRLs, the new lights seemed much dimmer and I even had them check them. I assume the original xenons were badly calibrated/setup.
