Is the BMW sunshade worth it?

We know how BMW loves to jack up the price due to the name, is this product worth it or is there similar quality for a better price?

$60 http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/769/BMW-UV-SUNSHADE

I'm sure there are cheaper products out there that function the same. The one thing that I like about the sun shade is it folds away quickly do to the cut-out for the rear view mirror, and the stow away pouch helps to not keep it dirty in your trunk when you are not using it.

There are definitely cheaper ones out there that will reflect the sun, but nothing will fit as well as the BMW one, as it is designed specifically for this car. I have an old one from Advance Auto that fits OK, though I got it for like $12.

I don't have this product but I say it's worth it if you park your car outside all the time like me. Try to find a used one, they usually go for $30-40 from other members. You will not find an aftermarket one that fits perfectly.

I purchased one off Amazon for like 8 bucks, it works okay for the most part but I have to bend it under the mirror so it leaves some spaces around the mirror exposed as well as a small gap on either side on the top corners because of the way it has to be put in for it to stay. I'm sort of happy with it but I think I'd just try to find a used one.

I have and love it. I got it from the dealer who sold it to me at 20% off. I don't know if it is because of the sunshade, but it seems my car's a/c cools the interior faster when I use it. It fits perfect and practically stays up on its own.

I have one. I like it because it is hard and stays in place covering the entire window. I also think it looks nice. The downside is that it is actually hard to store. I don't use the pouch it comes with to store it in, I just fold it up and lay it on the rear seats. It also can be bent if you try hard enough as it feels like it is made of a very hard cardboard material. It keeps the car much cooler than a cheap sunshade. I had a cheap one previously and it did not fully cover the windshield. I think it was definitely worth the purchase. Now I don't feel so bad for my dashboard when I park in the sun!

I have one and I really like it because it's sturdy and hard, not flimsy like the cheaper plain ones and not gonna lie, I liked that it looked nice and said bmw I wanted something that would work well and would last since I park my car outside, and it gets sunny here in SoCal. it also fits perfectly and has the mirror cutout so that's a plus. I feel like it does keep my car cooler when I get in but, it is a tad bit of a hassle to put up and take down though since it's hard but you'll get used to it. I say get one if you have a bit on money to spend and if you park your car outside often

IMO, no, not even close to worth it. Why? Well, because gold is the metal that provides insulation against heat and IR radiation. Copper is the next best. Aluminum is third. That much I remember from high school physics class. (Considering my youth occurred in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it's a miracle I remember my name let along that Jeopardy-fact. )

I suppose the pictured shield may have some merit if the coating on the outside of it is aluminum and the sun only shines on your cars windshield. The sole other advantage it'll have over a piece of generic cardboard is that it's cut to precisely fit your windshield. To that end, I might buy one and then head to Home Depot or an art store and buy a large sheet of cardboard. I'd then just use the BMW branded one as a template to fashion one from generic cardboard. Then I'd return it to the BMW store for a refund. If I felt especially outgoing, I might spray paint my cardboard first with primer and then with some shiny gold spray paint. For protecting your dashboard from the sun, that will work as well as anything else will.

Now, in practice, would I, Tony, actually go through all that? No. But then I wouldn't buy a BMW branded or generic sun shield either because I have yet to find a "whole car" sun shield, besides a garage. So while my steering wheel may not get quite as hot, the ambient temperature inside the car will still be 130°+ and that will still affect everything inside the car.

Good luck and all the best.

Thanks for that

I'm using some cheapo one atm and while I leave the windows slightly cracked I have noticed a drastic difference in temperature. Its kinda silly to ask $60 for it but the fitment and not fighting with it would be worth it, IMO.

That's good to hear! My building is all outside parking, I move it to the shade when/if a spot opens up!

I can see how that could be very effective. I can also see how some freedom fighters might come along and liberate the shade from my tyranny. What I can't see is where in my car I'd want to put if it's soaking wet from the rain.

Why spend 60 when I can pick one up at Walgreens for 20 bucks!
Hell I could cut open a cardboard box and get the same damn effect.

Now the wind screen on the other hand...

You could tint your windshield for that price and never have to worry about it.

Got the COVERCRAFT one online for like $50. Love it. Fits like a glove and doesn't have an obnoxious BMW stamped on it either lol.
