I think you can bolt some of the larger covers, but generally they are held in place simply by their own weight.

Then when you have a freak storm, if the drain is blocked, or if it's capacity is to low, you get a significant pressure build up that ultimately blows the cover off.

One of the reasons that the emergency services warned people not to walk around in flood waters recently was that there were likely to be manholes hidden below the water line with missing lids that had been blown off by the storm.

So you could find yourself stepping into a 4m hole without warning.

Too true. Water is a very dense medium and can move an awful lot of weight with a bit of pressure behind it. In cases where a manhole cover is likely (or proven) to regularly lift out of the manhole then they'll generally fit a vented and bolted down cover (obviously for clean water only). There are a couple that I know of nearby.

i know he's a bad piece of work, but I'm kinda glad Our police proibably wouldn't have done this.

It would have been as easy to sabotage the bike to break down after 5 miles and simply follow the guy with a chopper and then nab him.

I think judge might say that was simple murder ?

Anyone else feel this was very harsh policing ?

I must admit I was the same, my first reaction was "jeez, come on". But the last few seconds when they talk about terrorism and the fact he claimed to have a hand grenade made me think "fair enough".

The thing is, you don't know if the copper in the car meant to catapult him into heaven, or just stop him

how can that police man sleep at night??

they should have fitted a immobiliser which activated a few miles into his journey, it was pretty inhumane what they did there, his body was a rag doll...

not on i dont think... he didnt kill anyone FFS, but if he did point a gun at some poor souls head, even with no intention to kill and even without bullets, he still made someone feel there life was bout to end, and deserves to be punished greatly, but not in that way....

altho in the heat of the moment you still would want to kill the **** copper or no copper, but thats where there ''Proffesional head'' should/didnt come in on this occassion

I agree %100 on the plod's actions - if that kind of thing happened more, then it would send out a good sign to criminals the kind of response they will get. That criminal probably ruined the lives of the people he held as hostages - he deserves to be punished. Why should we pay as citizens for his trial, his jail time etc etc? It's not as though there was any question as to whether or not it was him that did the crime! I'd have no objection if a sniper shot him dead as he walked out of the building.
