It happens to me as well... I'm pretty sure it's normal. Hopefully someone can chime in.

There's a fan under the hood you know :}
If you have a lot of radiator fan activity, very loud, your water pump is maybe close to a sudden and crippling death. You may want to have the bmw specific codes read from the computer, just to be sure you do not have a lot of "low flow" errors stored in the memory. |

I hear the same fan (computer-like) noise from time to time after I turn my car off, sometimes even when im driving! From my understanding its coming from the CIC unit (CD Slot area).
I had mine replaced about a 3 weeks ago, a lot less noisy. Like a laptop, it gets hot, fans kick on to cool it down. |

There are lots of fans:
- radio amplifier - DME box - HVAC control unit sampler fan - main fan under the hood I don't have CIC/CCC and there is a DME box fan I've been able to hear sometimes while driving in hot conditions and it runs for a while after shutdown. Ditto with one cooling the factory amplifier in the trunk. |
