DIY trunk mounted grocery bag hooks

One thing the 335 doesnt have that my previous car (2006 Audi A4) did was a place to hang your grocery bags. What's worse than having all your shopping slide around in the trunk as you exit your local supermarket in a high G turn

So... courtesy of Audi...(dont flame me yet... they charged me over 500 dollars in bogus fees for a car that was in mint condition upon lease return) I removed the grocery bags from the A4 before I returned it.

Here is the DIY

DISCLAIMER:
1) Although the area you'll be drilling has no vital components nor did I see any wires, this DIY is done AT YOUR OWN RISK.

2) Do not even attempt this if you have back problems. This DIY requires you to be twisted in all the anatomically challenging positions. I'm in good shape and was sore after 15 minutes of being twisted around.

What you need:
- Walk into any Audi dealership (under-cover of course) and order the shopping bag hooks for the 2006 Audi A4. The hooks should come with the appropriate 4 screws.
- A drill with appropriate drill bit (about 1mm narrower than the screws)
- A Phillips head screwdriver
- A magic marker for marking drilling spots a sharpie works well.

The setup

Marking the drilling spots

- Test fit the hooks in the folded (horizontally) position. I wanted to be able to see them stick out a bit so that I didnt have to look under the trunk lid to find them (which is what I had to do in the Audi)
-Then mark the drilling spots with the market as you lay the hooks over your
desired spot.
(Pictured below is where I marked the two dots (two right-most dots)

Drill

Mount the hooks with two screws when done.

Repeat on the opposite side

Finished product/ in use pics

I would appreciate if someone can move this to the Master DIY thread. Thanks.

Nice But BMW does sell an accessory Trunk hanger... Not that the Volkswagon pieces won't work, but Here ya go.

You can see it in the upper right. Same deal with mounting but you get a template. Though I kind of think the ones shown above might offer a bit more flexibility/options.

Revlis... cool I've never see the bmw version... althought from the looks of it the audi hooks seems to tuck out of the way when not in use (for example I had to stick in a large bag of laundry today and it fit well with the hooks folded away)

I think this is a great idea. Theres no reason you should stick to one manufacturers products just because thats what they sell to go with the car. The VW ones seem more practical and functional. Im a fan.

I just bought the audi hooks from Tischer (mileone.com) just like the ones in the DIY for $9.93 each -two with shipping for $28.82

It didn't come w/ the screws though -don't know why, so going to the local homedepot to get some screws.

I went to a local hardware store and bought 3/4inch metal screws.

I did this Mod last night. (1st mod on my 330i since I bought it last year). My wife has an Audi A4 with these hooks, so I know how cool they are.

I bought them from a local Audi dealer here in Vancouver BC. They had to order them in (+- 1 week). They were Ca$ 14 each, so with taxes the 2 handles came to about Ca$31.50.

Some things to add to this great DIY thread:
1) As you can see in the pics above, there are some holes cut into the metal where the handles are mounted (ceiling of the trunk). But these holes are not symmetrical on the left and right side of the trunk. If you are super anal about having the handles as exact mirror images of each other left to right, you will have to spend some time checking both side before you drill.
2) I was worried about drilling the holes too wide for the screws. So my first set of holes were too tight. I just got a slightly larger drill bit and enlarged (redrilled) them a bit.
3) I would guess there is about 3/4 inch of open space above the ledge we drill into. I was worried about going through this and into the plastic above that. to prevent any mishaps, I just ensure that the dril bit only extended about 1/2 inch out of the drill.
4) For some reason I had trouble holding the handle in place while trying to mark the metal where to drill. To overcome this I made a template out of paper of where the holes needed to be drilled, then I stuck that to the metal with masking tape.

All in all, took about 45 minutes to do this. I am very happy with it.

Edit: the OP mentioned how uncomfortable this can be, as you need to twist into strange positions. I found it easier to kneel on the floor behind the trunk (on a gardening foam mat) and look into the trunk.
