Below 4,000 rpm the N52 is less than stellar. Once in the sweet spot however that smooth NA straight six is a visceral and aural delight with plenty oomph. Throw in a few switchbacks and it's blast.

Whenever I'm out late at night and stopped at a red light I usually do a launch. Right after I do it, I do get weary and go straight to looking for LEO's. I don't like to make an ass out of myself and go WOT to the next light during the day like some people do. I do like to go out to the unpopulated country area with abandoned roads and drive around there at WOT every once an a while. I might see 1 car the whole day. Its like a private track through the marshlands in SC. The smoothness and sound from the NA I6 is just incredible.

It's actually more entertaining to WOT in the 328 because you really have to dig in there to get to the higher end. Pretty rewarding paired with a manual

Depends..
With catless headers and a performance exhaust I tend to scare people a little. [330i, but same thing]

I do it every Sunday I leave work. Right in front of the cops in their back parking lot as they start their shift.
Sometimes I'll do launches. AWD launches are great. I get going fast. Granted, their HEMI V8 Chargers can catch up quick. (oh, I work there too so no worries) |

Whenever I am not on the brakes at a HPDE. The N52 is definitely strongest between 4000 and 6000 RPM. And it really is a wonderful motor - just less HP than most everybody else on the track. I often have instructors saying "More Throttle" coming out of a turn when I at WOT already.
I WOT once in a while on the public streets, but I like keeping my insurance rates down. |
