Fuel consumption dial going all weird?

Hey guys,

Have a weird problem I noticed with the fuel consumption dial.
This is the first time I've noticed this,

Before:
Car stopped: its all the way on the left
As i start to accelerate it generally goes pretty high all the way to the right and slowly drops as the car (auto) shifts up by itself and when im driving casually on the road it usually sits between the 6th tick and 2 ticks on the right of the middle.
As I brake, it generally just goes all the way to the left (0)

NOW:
When I accelerate the same thing happens but it SEEMS like it stays to the right more (uses more fuel)
HOWEVER, when I brake/stop, it goes ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT then when im a complete stop it drops to the left (0) again....
its very weird as I've never noticed it go to the right when i BRAKE
is something stuffed up?

I've never noticed this before and have done nothing to change the car...
is this normal???? its never happened and why would fuel consumption go up when my feet is off the gas pedal and hitting brake??

please help im worried

My needle is the same as your second scenario. My transmission has adapted to my driving style and is holding my gears slightly longer, even when braking. That's why the needle stays longer on the higher fuel consumption.

Well, the part about the needle going to the right when braking is strange. You'd expect it to go to the left since your MPG will be very high while you're still moving and your foot is off the gas. Then when you're stopped it goes to 0 because that's how the math works out.

When you say "all the way to the right" do you mean beyond the zero mark? As in you're getting negative MPG? That would have to be a software glitch.

Seen any changes in your average MPG? Reported by the computer and calculated at the pump?

He's from Sydney (I'm assuming Aussieland) and as such, will have a metric L/100km dial. On that dial, the far right is high consumption and far left is low consumpion/0.

Hi there thanks for the replies

I see pig, I thought that was right and reasonable when it stayed at higher fuel consumption jus weird it happened out of the blue,
However it's veryyyyy strange that it pushes up fuel consumption when I hit the brakes! :O

I'm not sure as I never resetted the computer trip to measure average use,
Actually on that topic, is it supposed to reset every time you turn off the car? Because mine sits at the last one (been the same the whole time)

pig is correct
Left side means 0l/100kmh and the right means more

When I brake, it actually goes to the right (to the max, not past it) then it drops back down to 0

I've never noticed it before so I was panicking something was wrong :/

LOL @ "I see pig," (sorry its just funny to me when i read that)

but anyways, my car does the same as your 2nd scenario, it goes all the way to the right (12mph) before it moves to the left (50mph) when i brake, guess that's normal.

i had mercedez and audi before this bmw, and this is my first car with a permanent fuel consumption dial on the dash, i keep staring at it too, can't help...

Perfectly normal, my car was just doing that on my way home. My e30 does it too (only at dead stop the needle sits at max L/100km, not 0).

Hi MrPig, what do you mean sits at max? you mean on the right or left?

Usually, when I used to brake, it would progressively lower, but pretty much sit on the left when i brake (use no fuel consumption)

However, now when I brake, the slower I go, the higher the dial goes to the right,
When I get to a complete stop, it will sit on 0 (all the way on the left)

I don't understand why it actually goes higher when I brake now when it never used to and it doesn't make sense for the dial to show it jumps up in fuel consumption when I brake?

Sorry if that doesnt make much sense and appreciate the reply

I mean in my e30 when I'm sitting at a red light/idling it shows 20L/100km (or whatever the maximum is on the dial).

I'm certain it always did and you never paid attention to it. At least it always did on my e90.

I'm a tight ass so I always pay attention to it haha, and have never seen it 'go up then back down' while braking.
I think I confused you. At a complete stop, it's always sat on 0, always and this hasn't changed.
Thanks
