E90 or E92?
I'm soon to be in the market for an E90 or E92 335i(x-drive maybe?). What I'm hoping for some insight into is whether the coupe is totally ridiculous to have with kids at all, or for driving around 4 adults for that matter.
We're thinking about kids in the next few years, and I won't be the one driving them around, but in a pinch I may be taking people in the back of the car. But that coupe is just so beautiful. Am I crazy if I get a coupe? Will I be turning around and selling it for more backseat space/actual back doors? Thanks in advance! |

It is not practical, but if it is for occasional usage, a car seat will fit on the back of the coupe. If it becomes regular that you have to strap a kid in the back seat, you'll curse yourself quickly though.

I had an E46 coupe and now have an E90 sedan so hopefully I can shed a little light.
Using the coupe as a DD was great when I still had access to a larger car when I needed to take a few friends or move some stuff. However when I moved to the city I no longer had space for two cars and was down to just my coupe for everything - and that got old really fast. Asking friends to scramble into the back was a pain on short drives and it was nearly impossible to take my car for long trips. Ultimately I got fed up so when it was time to move to a 335i, sedans were all I would consider. If you have kids or often take others in the car then I would not even consider an E92 and go straight for the E90. If you will usually ride in your car alone and have access to a bigger vehicle when you need the space, then go for the coupe and enjoy the years of driving it before your wife makes you start taking the kids to school. |

i was really never a fan of the e90 syling from a front end perspective, that's why i really like the e90 m3, since it has the e92 nose.
a few buddies of mine have done small kids with coupes. like anything else it becomes habit but i could see it being a huge pain in the ass

my buddy of mine had the e92 335i xdrive and i had the e90 335i xdrive, the coupe IMO is more sporty and fun to drive but i'm all about practicality, go for the e90!

I only like coupes in general... never been turned on my sedans whatsoever. I love my E92 to death, but then again I'm a single guy in my 20's with no kids. I could imagine it being a pain with a family.

get what you want deep down. You can make a coupe work even with kids.

they don't, but i'm not gonna get into an argument about it. e90 M3 (sedan obviously) has the same headlights, grill, hood (obviously M3 hood is specific, talking more where it meets the headlights/grill) as pre-LCI e92 lineup.

I have an e92 and 2 small kids, ages 6 & 2. if you are going to have kids go for the e90. even with my kids being in booster seats and not full blown car seats, it is still a pain to get them in and out of the car. in north carolina it is required by law that for the first 12 months the child be in a seat that faces in reverse. the seat in front of it has to be all the way forward to make room for it to fit. I recommend getting an e90 or getting an e92 and trade it for an e90 or x5 when you do have kids.

I love my coupe but I sometimes wonder if it would have been more practical for me to have bought an e90 since it's easier to let people in the back. Since I don't drive with people in the back that often, it's not that big of a deal for me. I think for practicality, you should get an e90 since you know you'll be having kids in the near future but if you don't mind going through the pain of putting in and taking out a car seat then you should go for the coupe if that's what you really want. Maybe what you should do is get a car seat and visit a local BMW dealer and set up the car seat in an e92 and in an e90 and see how you feel. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies all. It's a tough decision because my wife will have a bigger car, and we can always take the other car. My brother in law got a car seat dock for his truck and said he never used it once, they'd just drive in his wife's car when they were taking the kids anywhere.
Is there a difference between backseat room between the coupe and sedan? or is it just the lack of doors? |

The coupe is longer and has more leg room. I have an e92 and my friend has an e90, more comfortable in the back of the coupe just a hassle to get in and out.

E90 is for a practical family, it suits you better since you are having kids soon. E92 can be a hassle sometimes, it is more suitable for a different lifestyle.

E90 for me but from what I've heard the e92 has a sportier feel. But thats not saying that the e90 doesn't feel sporty. But from what you described, I think an E90 would be more practical for you. The best question to ask your self is; do you see yourself waking up in the morning driving to work in a coupe or sedan?

I can tell you from experience that having a coupe and kids is a HUGE pain in the ass. Believe me man, I've been dying for a coupe, but realistically, while my boys are wee lads(they're 3 and 6) that just isn't going to happen. But you know, some people can grin and bear it. It's all a matter of how much inconvenience you can handle. Still though, a sedan isn't that bad and with some time and a bit of cash, they can look pretty darned bad ass too. Good luck on your new ride!

I had an E90 before, didn't feel sporty enough for me I'm in my early 20's and rarely drive anymore then my GF...
Sold that and bought an E92 I love it, only pain in the ass is on the rare occasions that I do have rear passengers I have to get out to let them out. Other then that I've always loved the coupe look and feels a lot more sportier IMO. |

I'll add to what everyone else has said. If you're going to use the back seat a good bit get the e90. I have a e92 and we would rarely use my car to go anywhere since people hated getting in and out of the backseat, though they all commented about how much room there is once they got in. The long doors are a pain in the ass too when you end up in a tight spot.

No shame in the e90! I got my e90 for the same reason - getting married, expecting kids within the next few years and need to be able to comfortably transport family, friends, and clients.
