Had to get oil added (not changed) at 6,000 miles

I know that bmw suggest the 15,000 mile oil change intervals and im really not here to discuss that.

When i got to around 5500 miles i was checking my service section on my i-drive i noticed that the oil meter read that my car only had 1/4 of a tank. I then proceeded to forget about it, but at around 6,000 miles i started getting the exclamation mark warning (the one in the triangle ) when i shut my car off every few times. I finally payed attention to it one time and realized that it was telling me i needed more oil. I then went back to the i-drive screen and checked the oil and it said something like, "please add a quart of oil as soon as possible." To make a boring story short, i got the oil added at no fee from the dealer.

I was wondering if any of you guys have actually had to add more oil before the suggested oil change, and when at how many miles did you do it? (which i plan on doing at about 8,000) I know that i drive my car extremly hard and i think that may have something to do with why i need more oil so quickly. Then on the other hand ,i may be completly wrong and this could be completly normal. Just thought id ask the question cuz id be interested to find out when most people need more oil added.

wow, you didn't pay attention to the warnings the car had given you

if you were in an older car with dipstick and no level warning you may have run the thing dangerously low on oil

you may want to look into buying an extra quart of oil from the parts store
seems a bit crazy to have to take the thing in to the dealer for a 6 dollar quart of oil, not sure about you but my time's worth more than the $$$ savings from a quart of oil

instead of just a simple explanation like longtrans below, i think people should include other things.... like how hard you drive the car or other large variables that could change the number of miles before more oil is needed (not changed)

im not hating on longtran here, but we can use him as an example. A beter reply could have said something about how hard he drives the car, how fast he goes, how often he drive for long periods of times, how often he starts and stops, when he was born, his mothers maiden name, how old that cute little asian boy is in all thos pictures..... IT REALLY DOESNT MATTER!!!! just give an answer that helps me solve me issue.

better example: "seems like i need an oil fill up every 7000 miles. This could be due to me driving my car so hard or even from all the ladies that i frequently pack in there"

just put some meat into ur sentances and ill be happy

BMW engines tend to burn some oil during first 15k miles.

My car has over 7000 miles on it and it has over half still showing on the readout. I drive reasonable most times, with a few spirited 0-60 sprints here and there...

I passed the 4000 mile mark over Thanksgiving and only had 1/4 of a tank. I immediately went to the dealer and they added oil for no charge. I wouldn't think that it happens but I guess it does if you just drive agressive. I hope it isn't a problem though.

The exact same thing happend to my dads 750. After about 5000 miles he had to add a quart of oil. No big deal. BMW do that until they are 1000 broken in at about 20,000 miles.

allow me to appologize, that did sounds really teacherish... how ironic that i sound old and grumpy... just sort of wierd cuz im 17, and lone of the least conforming teenagers youv yet to meet. (although im very presentable in my nice colared shirts, just dont look in my trunk or glove box )

back on topic... i got my oil added about 1,250 miles ago now and i looked at it today on my i-drive service notifacation screen. The oil level read "O.K." but the meter also showed that it was at only a quarter of a tank.
