First E90 in the family

Greetings! I'm not new to BMW, but I have zero E90 experience. Well, zero experience with the 328xi anyway.

My parents just picked up an '11 328xi sedan today. I know all about the N55 issues in the 335i, but are there any things to look out for in the 328? I did a quick search around and looked for any sort of E90 328 FAQ or common issues stickies but didn't find any. It's all HPFP chatter for the 335. Any insights you can offer would be immensely appreciated!

Thanks!

The HPFP problem is dead and buried. BMW fixed the issue with new pumps and software updates. I literally almost never hear of it anymore

The N52 is a pretty reliable engine overall, but you may want to check things such as the valve cover gasket for leaking, etc.. The water pump can be an issue but it shoudn't be on an '11 since it's most likely got the newest version of the pump. Other than that, treat your car well and it will return the favor!

Thanks Thomas. That's what I suspected. If I remember correctly the N52 is a descendent of the M54 which was a descendant of the M50. All pretty good motors save for some head gasket sealing issues in the early days for the M50. This puppy only has 16K on the clock so it's still a baby. Not even a dribble.

It's a 328. I know all about the N55, but zero about the N52/328.

Once you hit like 70k you'll start to experience blown gaskets. Mostly the valve cover gasket, oil housing gasket, and oil pan gasket. Like all BMW's water pumps are likely to give out. Other than those, just normal wear and tear just as any car. The N52 is a solid engine.

When you say issues in the N55, what issues do you mean? From what I've read and experienced, the N55 is a vast improvement in terms of reliability over the N54.

Sorry, I meant N54. Worlds colliding. I have an F30 335i.

Did I mention how weird it is that my 78 yr. old father just bought an E90? His first BMW.

Welcome to the E90 family dude, err...or maybe you can tell your mom and dad I said, "hey", . Ok, so my question is this, how will you go about convincing your folks that some subtle upgrades will improve the car? I say subtle because, let's face it, mom and dad may not want a lowered stance, fog light deletes, a more "growly" exhaust, or carbon fiber anything, lol. You know we know you wanna do something to that car!
