Essential part of excessive speeding (not that I've ever done it of course) e.g. Bullrun (not the TV series). Look up Alex Roy if you want the full details on cross country LEO counter measures.

Yup. You thought there was a magical piece of equipment that tells you where the cops are 100% of the time? You have to listen to what they are saying and interpret where they are.

It's amazing how many people think their radar detectors are broken when a cop drives by and it doesn't go off. They automatically assume that it will alert them whenever there is a cop nearby as if police cars have some type of radioactive signature that sets them off.

I suppose if one is incredibly nefarious, a police scanner is a must have accessory. If one just speeds occasionally, or frequently, I can see how it could be useful to have one, but I don't think I'd make it a point to buy one.

There is no magical cop identifier device. The only way to know where police are is if your local department has GPS installed on all the cruisers and you somehow hacked their system to see where they were at all times.

there is a difference between a police scanner and a radar detector...Your buddy sounds like he has a radar detector.

You can get a scanner on your iphone or android if you want. However, most all Police radios are moving to encrypted digital radios so I believe scanner will be useless in the very near future. Since de-encrypting a signal is illegal, no manufacture of a scanner will make a one for the new all digital systems.
Also, it not necessary illegal to have a scanner in your car, except in FL I believe, but most all states have a laws that say if you use one in a commission of a crime it is illegal such as speeding and avoiding the police. |

Folks may, however, have a scanner to avoid the speeding ticket. (As, I think I get what you mean, but I'm posting this to be sure, not to yank your chain.)

So this thread isn't a total fail, here is an example of how radio scanners can be used in "extreme situations". This particular set up was for setting a cross country speed record. The car has two GPS enabled scanners that scan specific frequencies based on location.
