So I found what seems to be an RFID black label on my mirror
I was adjusting my rear view mirror today and I happened to notice a label, which appeared to be peeling up off the top of it.
Upon closer inspection I found it was what appeared to be an RFID label to the best of my estimation-matte black on the other side- and about the size of a shipping label. I am not sure what this is all about but it kind of creeps me out- can anybody confirm exactly what the hell this label might be for and why it would be on the top of the rear view mirror? My theory is that it is for some kind of dealer service experience, or to alert the service adviser when you're arriving Last edited by Dark_Knight_335; 07-24-2013 at 02:10 PM.. |

I saw the topic come up once before but I can't recall what the outcome was. I want to say its for the dealer, when I pulled in with my loaner car the LCD screens at my dealer said "Welcome Mr BlackBB6" as soon as I entered the parking bay.

Yep, could be that or I read somewhere BMW was attempting to use RFID tags for all parts and tools. I think it was part of their 'lean mfg' project. Maybe they just forgot to remove after assembly, or the dealer is tracking you

I too saw a thread about this a while back. If you are the first owner I'd ask your dealer about it.
If you are not it's likely for a garage door, parkade gate, perhaps even a toll booth. My last parkade I parked at used RFID, and by the mirror was the best place to put it for the reader to pick it up. Either way, if you know you don't need it, it's gone now. If somebody was actually tracking you there are less obvious ways. |

...so bizarre! Maybe one of the knucklehead dealership service bays put it on there for some godforsaken reason. |

Yea this is a common thing that happens at most dealerships. It's the way they know YOU have arrived. It's an RFID which lets the service guy and your SA know as well as put you on the board for vehicles that have appointments. You can take it off with no issue (I was freaked out at first when I had one... removed it and since then other dealerships have tried to put a new one on). Sometimes it's behind the rear view mirror, sometimes its in the drivers side door jam... they get creative about where they hide that sticker. I just remove it and hand it back to them saying, "No thanks". But they also use it for inventory management so they know where they placed your car as well. - Faz |

While I wouldn't discount aliens, it's likely a tracking RFID for shipping purposes.
Walmart uses RFID to track store inventory in real time. Of course, after seeing Walmart customers, I'm almost convinced they aren't human. |

It's how they track the cars when they get shipped. Easy to scan them in and not have to input model, color, trim, packages etc.
Or, maybe the aliens are watching you. Either way, you got it off.

Thank god the aliens can't track me anymore. I stuck it under my loathed neighbors shit box- let them follow him and give him the probe
