E90 Owners -- What Windows Do You Open When Running w/o AC
So I was running in my "MPG" mode (as opposed to my usual "EGO" mode LOL) on the way to work because I was low on fuel.
So I turned off the AC and opened the passenger side windows an inch or two each. It causes a nice flow of air that circulates around the car, doesn't cause too much noise to interfere with my tunes , and presumably doesn't cause too much wind resistance. What windows do you open and why when running with the AC off? Or if you never run without the AC, feel free to respond too.

Never without A/C. However, when the car has been parked in the sun it gets very hot inside, so I just roll down the driver's and rear passenger windows. I've noticed air flows more freely that way than if I open both front windows. It looks kind of weird though, but it's only for a couple of blocks.

When I'm in the four door I'll open 2 windows just a crack. Both on the drivers side or both on the passenger side. If you have dust floating around, you'll see this creates a flow out of the vehicle and cleans it up a bit. If you open opposite windows you get more flying dust around the car that will eventually settle.

When I roll them down its either all of them, the front 2, or a little on each window. I can't have one side be uneven with the other lol. Sometimes I have friends come in while all my windows are down and they roll theirs up and I get annoyed because it just looks weird....

Either all 4 down a few inches, or just opposite corners a few inches. Sunroof tilted in either case.

Even in the winter time, I crank up the heater and once its warm I'll pop on the A/C every now and then to De-humidify or De-fog any of the windows. I have 20% Llumar tint all around (Sunroof is tinted 35% with Llumar) and when I park I make sure to face the windshield away from the angle of the sun (front into a space or back into a space, depending on the situation). If I'm driving and it's hot inside the car, I make sure to kick on the A/C at level 1 without recirculate/auto (basically just outside air because outside air is cooler then inside air) + have all the windows/sunroof fully opened... after a few minutes I'll hit the Auto button and close up everything. At that point I'm just chill'n like a villian, colder than a polar bears toe nails! Last edited by fazman; 07-24-2013 at 06:42 PM.. |

Always roll down all the windows and sunroof, even on the highway doing 100km/h
I only turn on the A/C twice in this summer so far, usually when I dress up for dinner I like the sun, and the air flows.. Noise doesnt bother me much as I will adjust the music volume just loud enough to cover the wind (yeah, I am weird) |

either all down or a/c on. I used to drive with the windows down a lot more but in my e90 the back seatbelts slap the seat in a really annoying way when going over about 35.

It's been proven or disproved (depending on which side of the argument that you are on) that running with the A/C off and the windows down is actually less efficient than running with the A/C on and windows up. Keeping out of the gas and keeping your tires properly inflated are about the best ways to improve mpgs.
