I just went through a 2 week debacle at my dealer over that exact same noise. I brought it in thinking it was a loose heat shield. They ended up tracing it to the transmission and brought over a rep from ZF to look it over.

The dealer and ZF concluded that it was a "normal" sound for the auto tranny and that it was within operating tolerances even though not all trannies make that noise. No-go on getting it replaced.

If you bring it in and find out any additional info, please post.

ya i went to my indy shop and they think its normal since its not throwing any code or failure. Its just so annoying when i turn my ac on or gear on N.

yup that is the sound of a N54 for ya. I hate the way it sounds when the A/C is running just the other day someone told me sounds like your car needs a tune up. haha

Actually I've got that sound on my N55 -- 2011 e90 AT

I think there's a PUMA case out for this, no?
Something about some rubber damper that can go into the tranny area to at least quiet it down- anyone confirm?
