sure, they have to borrow the money to lend to the customer, but the amount of margin on the cars now with the loonie at bogie, is pretty unbelivable.

It's the law of supply and demand. The E93 is hot in the market place now so they treat it as such.

But you can write off enough to make leasing a nice car worth it. You cannot write off as much and as quickly by purchasing.

(P.S. This applies to those who own their own business or are self-employed.)

i lease all my cars.

why would i ever use my owm money to buy or finance a car when i can write off my most of my car payment, insurance and gas

the beauty of owning your own business...................

plus i do actually use it for work

i always see people say leasing is stupid, or if you lease you cant afford the car etc

i get to drive a bmw and have my insurance and gas paid and i dont have to use my own money

if this is what makes me dumb, lol, ill be dumb all day

thanks. I am fully aware that automobile write offs are only applicable to business income, and in limited circumstances to "employees".

leasing isn't stupid, BMW lease rates are just ridiculous. not getting into a debate on owning vs. leasing - there are a million threads on this. I am a professional and therefore writing off lease payments is not available. I've always paid cash for my BMW's, becuase a) I keep them 6-7 years and b) see above

What I did was looked up some lease rates at leasecompare.com when I went to negotiate my '07 E93. The dealership didn't finance me through BMW instead we went through US Bank who matched my leasecompare.com interest rate (money factor) which was in the low 6% range.

The CAD is strong against the US dollar, not nearly so much against other currencies, so I don't understand how the CAD:US xr makes any difference to the margin for a car made in Germany. I think a year ago the EUR:CAD xr was almost exactly what it is today.

when you say "finance rate", you mean you are looking to buy through BMW?

with the dollar high, and the Bank of Canada lowering interest rates this month, 8.25 sounds a bit sick to me.

I would start to think about either a secured line, or an external leasing company. Even if they offer a couple points less in residual, you may make that up in the lower interest rate.. Probably a wash.

agree re: secured line if you are buying. that is what i did when i bought my first BMW. if you have enough equity in your home, a secured line can be a source of (relatively) cheap money.

So what's your point? The relevant currency information to the margin BMW makes on a car sold in Canada is the CAD:EUR rate, which is currently back to exactly where it was a year ago and hasn't fluctuated anything like the range of the USD to the Euro. The OP was suggesting that because the CAD is higher against the USD BMW is making higher margins than they used to in Canada.

Just because BMWs made outside the US are now less profitable in the US than they used to be doesn't make them more profitable in Canada relative to how profitable they used to be in Canada. I.E. BMW Canada's margin as it relates to currency fluctuations is the same today as it was a year ago.
