I get this at times too. Seems I'm not the only one.

I've had this happen a few times, but usually taking the gas nozzle out and retrying resolves the issue.

Pump slower (use the first notch on the automatic trigger thing) and try rotating the nozzle so the handle is pointing more towards the back off the car. That seems to do it for me.

I can only speak from experience on other vehicles for this issue, not BMW.

However, this was a very common GM problem for quite some time and 99% of the time it was related to the charcoal canister for the fuel tank. I am not exactly sure what BMW uses, but I am sure its quite similar. Basically a canister of some sort to catch fuel vapor instead of allowing it to vent to atmosphere.

What happens: Driver stops at the gas station and proceeds to fill his/her tank. After the nozzle clicks off, the driver wants to get that last little amount into the tank and keeps clicking the pump on/off to add more. Unfortunately, this causes the tank to spill actually gasoline, not just the vapor, into the canister and ruin it. Ultimately, this leads to issues at the pump and being able to fill the tank without the pump shutting off on its own.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to let the group know that it was a possibility. Oh, and the fix on the GMs was to replace the canister.

For me it depends on the station, I always wonder about it if its air building up. When I was in Germany last time doing my European Delivery I notice that all their pumps have a "small ball bouncing around in a glass enclosure" apparently this helps from air build up...

Turn the filler nozzle upside down and try that. I've had it happen with other vehicles and that worked.

this has happened to me before... on my first e92

the trick was to hold the "trigger" halfway if it starts clicking. I know it takes a little longer, but the gas gets in

Tank ventilation valve. Sometimes they go bad on these cars, but not too often. I believe there is an SB out for it, but I don't recall whether it is a mechanical fix or if it was for reprogramming updated software to prevent the issue. My car occasionally throws a code for it (hasn't lit the CEL, but the code is stored in memory when I scan the car on occasion). I have experienced the symptoms when trying to fill up at the pump, but it has never bothered me enough to look into fixing it. I just reposition the nozzle and continue fueling.

This ^. Just don't squeeze it all the way.

Happens to me with my E90 a lot too. Usually removing the pump nozzle and re-inserting it with more of an angle solves the issue.
