Cleaning VANOS Solenoids

Hey Everyone, I have been doing a lot of reading but am coming up with conflicting answers. I want to clean my vanos solenoids. What do people recommend cleaning the solenoids with? I have heard of many techniques and products but I would like to see what most people feel is safe. Right now both solenoids are working (at least to some extent) so I don't want to damage them. I am trying to isolate an issue and want to try cleaning the solenoids before replacing them. Thanks.

most people seem to use gasoline, then rinse with the oil you use in your oil changes.
