335is exhaust too loud?
Ive been looking for a 2011+ e92 and came across a great 335is example out of state. I like everything about the car but just wondering how loud that exhaust is inside the cabin. Ive seen a few youtube videos - but most are from outside so its kinda hard to gauge.
Im not much for an exhaust, I do like a quiet ride especially on the freeway - so just wondering if any of you with the 335IS feel like its too much sound at times? please share your experience so I can make my decision quicker! Or anybody that went from 335i to 335is would be a good comparison as well as I previously had an e92 335i. Thanks! |

While I do not have a regular 335i to compare it too, I find the exhaust to be mellow. It can get loud when in the upper rpms during acceleration however everyday cruising I need to roll the windows down and turn the radio off to really hear it well. I did the golf tee mod and its a little noiser in the cabin during city driving but before that I could hear wind and tire noise over the exhaust.

Inside it's great. The cabin is really 'air-tight.' But roll down the windows, and you hear the AMAZING turbo burble and loud goodness at high RPMs.

Agree with SaMaster on the sound. Inside it's pretty muted to the point I actually find myself rolling my windows down more often just to hear that great exhaust sound. |

its fairly muted, with the windows up. and i have done the "golf tee" mod
on especially on the freeway, its noticeable at high RPM, but you'll probably hear the exhaust of a shitty after-market exhaust from another car more than the 335is's and... if youre on the freeway on D6/D7, you won't notice it... I only speak for the DCT.

The 335is exhaust note is comfortably situated between the stock 335i and the BMW performance exhaust. It is only loud when you want it to be and has a very nice note.

Like others have noted, it isn't obnoxiously loud.
I wish it was louder...

Nooo!! It is just perfect. Wouldn't change it one bit. Mellow at the lower ranges and when you're just cruising and then opens up into a bellow once you get into the upper ranges.

And the pops and crackles when it's cold...OMG, that sounds like muffled gun shots...pure perfection. No one wants to believe that it is the stock exhaust. Hell! When I took it in for the battery recall work, the SA was in disbelief that it was the stock exhaust...guess he hadn't come across many is'. My neighbor's teenage son made my day a while back when he asked me whether the 'Red BMW that sounds like it is shooting fire' was my car.

I went from stock to is to PE. The is exhaust is fine with the windows up or down...minimal drone. Louder than hell though at cold start up

Speaking of which, MTurbo, my noob search skills tell me the there is a flap in the exhaust the is closed to reduce noise on startup (possibly helps bring engine up to temp faster?). The golf tee mod is the term for plugging the hose that would actuate the flap. It does open after a while anyway. Might throw a silent code if you pull the plug in the trunk (the other way of doing the "mod"): http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80661 |

Thanks for all the responses - very helpful seems like the consensus is everyone is in favor of it and not too loud.
I test drove an 2011 S4 audi with the Stasis exhaust and hated that sound - inside and outside of the car, lots of drone and just way too loud for my taste. So Im just hoping that it wont be overkill after a week or two of driving. Gonna give it some more thought or find an IS locally that I can take around the block to hear it for myself. Anybody in the Phoenix area with an IS? I think I saw a total of 2 here in the past few years - and its a car haven out here! Very rare car... |

Well I'm in Maricopa south of Phoenix and my wife drives one. She commutes back and forth to baseline and I10 during the week. I work graveyard on the weekends at 56th and washington and don't drive the car so.... Ive heard that scottsdale has a car meeting near the Talking Sticks baseball stadium on saturdays. Maybe someone there has one.

My IS sounds great with the stock exhaust, only loud when you want it to be. For all that wish it was louder throw some catless downpipes on it and you will have loud! My local police department loves me and thanks to them being stuffed in there they have a hard time believing me when i tell them its stock, but from what they can see everything is all there.

If you think that's loud, you won't want to upgrade t the performance exhaust. It's like Amy neighborhood's alarm clock between the months of October to April.
