Question Gear selector lights not working consistently!

My car(2007 E90 sedan) is a Pre-Lci model with Auto tranny. A few months back, the problem started with the R light not coming on when selecting reverse (the orange light in the interior trim beside the knob: http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1268716638).

Yesterday, I discovered the same thing occurring when selecting the D mode. It doesn't light up unless you move the knob back and forth quite a few times or just tap it in your direction (when D is selected).

Even when it lights up, the selection of DS mode and back to D mode will cause the D indication light to stop working again unless I repeat the fiddling thing again.

What could possibly be faulty here?

Update: No fault codes whatsoever.

My model is a 2007 Pre-Lci 320i E90. I know nothing about fault codes whatsoever, the light comes on when I fiddle with the gear knob as I've stated, but would just go out again as soon as I move the knob or even touch it, lol.

I would appreciate every bit of help you can offer as this thing is driving me nuts.

I just rechecked. There are NO fault codes registered. And the dashboard indicator works just fine, it's just an issue with the lights switch underneath the gear selector or something...

Open it up and make sure the wiring is not frayed.

I believe this is a completely different issue in which the manual shifting/DS mode does not work. Mine is only related to the indication lights of selected gear. I checked all the wires and they seem pretty fine.

Pop the cover off around the shifter. There is a connector underneath that hooks up to that lighted shift display. Perhaps it is loose. Disconnect and reconnect.

The shift boot pulls right off, just reach inside the leather part and pull up against the edge of the black plastic trim. The whole black plastic trim will pop off the interior center trim panel.

I tried that to no avail. I think it's something else. Thanks for the heads up though

I think I'm going to seek the help of one as I'm not willing to change the whole PRNDL switch or whatever they call it, for a minor problem like that.

Pretty sick specs of your car btw! (your signature)

Buy the indicator module and swap them. If that doesn't work then return it. Then you've gotta check the wiring which would be a real pain in the ass

He is giving you good advice, I believe seeing in E46 forum that sometimes there is contacts by lights and shifter. As it slides between gears it touches contacts which completes the circuit for the given light. Just look it over and you might see something thats out of place and doesnt make sense.
