AFAIK, the new BMW diesels don't have glow plugs. It used to be the case when the engine was cold that there would be a little 'coil' light in the dash. When that went out you could start the diesel. I haven't noticed anything like that on my 320d and theres no mention in the manual. I just get in and start. Don't know why there aren't glowplugs. Technological advancements?

To see what I mean - walk up to your locked car (after it has been standing - so like in the morning). As you unlock the car, you'll hear the doors unlock and the car making a noise. The car is pressurizing the fuel lines, starting the electronics, and warming the glowplugs... It's very clever I say. |

I stand corrected.. Very neat clever. I'll have to pay close attention. Do you know at about what temperature the glow plugs are needed? I only ask because most of the time when the car has been standing for a while it's garaged (ambient temp of between 10 and 15 degrees C).

The manual for my 330d (UK) warns that when it is very cold (below freezing) there may be a delay between you pressing Start and the engine turning over to allow for the glow plugs to come up to temperature.

I think they are needed when it's about 5-10 degree's C...but that would only take a few (3ish) seconds. Below freezing, it could take up to 10 seconds. It's all automated, if they are not warm enough - the car will delay it's start - so I don't even think about it :P |
