AFAIK, the new BMW diesels don't have glow plugs. It used to be the case when the engine was cold that there would be a little 'coil' light in the dash. When that went out you could start the diesel. I haven't noticed anything like that on my 320d and theres no mention in the manual. I just get in and start. Don't know why there aren't glowplugs. Technological advancements?

There actually are glow plugs. They turn on as you unlock your doors (or open your doors if the car is unlocked). Because it only takes a few seconds for them to heat up - you don't even notice them working - and never have to wait for them.

To see what I mean - walk up to your locked car (after it has been standing - so like in the morning). As you unlock the car, you'll hear the doors unlock and the car making a noise. The car is pressurizing the fuel lines, starting the electronics, and warming the glowplugs...

It's very clever I say.

I stand corrected.. Very neat clever. I'll have to pay close attention. Do you know at about what temperature the glow plugs are needed? I only ask because most of the time when the car has been standing for a while it's garaged (ambient temp of between 10 and 15 degrees C).

The manual for my 330d (UK) warns that when it is very cold (below freezing) there may be a delay between you pressing Start and the engine turning over to allow for the glow plugs to come up to temperature.

My manual also says "may" - this would be the case where you try to start the car before they have finished warming...

I think they are needed when it's about 5-10 degree's C...but that would only take a few (3ish) seconds. Below freezing, it could take up to 10 seconds.

It's all automated, if they are not warm enough - the car will delay it's start - so I don't even think about it :P
