Washington State Traffic Tickets etc
I have a question for you guys in Seattle and vicinity area .What is the average speed over posted speed you get ticketed, just from your experience?
In San Diego, one can go 80mph almost all the time with out getting a ticket. All traffic seems to drive at 80mph with out getting needlessly ticketed.I am getting a 335 and wanted to know if it would be a waste and if 328 would be more than enough given tough traffic laws in WA. Would I get ticket everytime I open the throttle? What are some of the roads you guys test the speed limit:-) Does every 335 owner keep a radar detector handy. I might be taking a job with Expedia in Belluvue. Kind of curious:-) |

Expedia.....dot..coooooom! Sorry I just had to sing the theme song for you.
10mph over on freeways and highways most of the time is good enough to get ya left alone. However like everywhere else, certain areas offer exceptions. On local streets you need to watch your ass, 5 over max....however you'd be pretty foolish to want to open it up on side streets. I-5 around the metro areas are too damned congested to do anything really crazy. N of Everett and S of Olympia it opens up to a wopping 70mph. (and of course Eastern WA) You really just have to pick your spots. There are a lot of great day trip roads in Wa state. I have no trouble racking the pedal pretty much every time I drive. It's just never sustained. I have radar, and am about to get a laser jammer.

well WA isn't as easy going as CA. I just got a 328xi from the dealer as a loaner for the past few days, and i can say that I really miss my 335i. Nothing against the 328s, but when i had to pass people on the highway, the power just wasnt there in comparison to the 335i. gluck with your decision, but you can never go wrong with more power when you need it

In rural areas the cops can be real assholes. I know some people who have gotten tickets for going just 5 miles over the limit. Also, I agree with all that normtrum and vant826 have said. And at certain times, I see a flurry of cops on every road and freeway in the area -- there must be times when they are desperate for maximizing the state/local revenues.

Getting ticketed going 5mph over speed limit is gay! As a matter of fact speed limit in Washington is too low. I believe nationwide the freeway speed should be 80-85mph.
Seems like I will need a radar detector! |

The state patrols in Washington and Oregon are pricks! If you are a minority watch out, they're freakin racist! I've gotten tickets for going 5 mph over the speed limit on I-5 near Seattle.
The traffic up here in the Northwest is definitely in slow motion compared to Cali. |

Yep, to many law-abiding citizens thinking that they can haul their ass in the left lane of the freeway 10 miles below the speed limit.

With license tab tax reduced the revenue for PD is depended more-more to this tickets, silly how the law is not consistent. BTW, to OP, if you drive like in LA here in Seattle, get a good traffic lawyer you'll need it. I like driving on CA freeways myself, I did 90MPH in Sacramento valley many times back in College days and cops with mustang GT5.0 passed me by w/o even blinking. |

If you take that job, you will be the second e92 in the office
WSP does have some favorite areas to set up speed traps, but it's those unmarked cars that get you. I've noticed a variety of unmarked vehicles ranging from a Dodge Charger, Beretta, and even a Mini. Now they have a plane that patrols at night with nightvision. I got pulled over 4 times last year on my motorcycle. Although I was able to get them taken care of I pretty much just try to keep a low profile in both my vehicles.

You are going to HATE Washington for a while. 1st, all the rain. 2nd, no sun in the fall, winter, or spring. 3rd, it's a tiny bit colder here. 4th, these are some of the crappiest drivers I've ever been around (that includes: SoCal, NoCal, Chicagoland, Atlantic City, SE Colorado, and Montana).
Plus, speed traps are all over. They run with with marked cars, unmarked cars, and motorcycles. I've even seen cops standing behind overpass signs holding radar guns. But, to answer your question. The better 1/2 has an E92 328xi. Next year it will get upgraded to a 335i or M3. |

Thanks Sir can I have another? This is the mentality you have to have, it's just so very hard to drive enthusiastically in WA. After driving overseas and in California, returning to WA was a culture shock. I've never recieved so many speeding tickets in my life.
Oregon & Washington have their eyes on your speedy cash.

Ok I realize I'm new to your forum as well as an e46 owner but are you guys freaking high?! I speed my a$$ off all around Seattle for the last 4 years (in an M3 and 3 years in an A4 before that) and what do I have to show for it? 2 speeding tickets total and 1 of those was dismissed. I'm always telling ppl who dont live here how I can go 2 weeks driving around town and spot maybe 1 or 2 cops total. Although the quantity seems to have picked up since 1/08 but still if you think this is bad, you have not spent enough time driving in SoCal, Phoenix or even Albucrackie. I'm talking about Seattle, King County not the eastside or snohomish. You guys need to come over here and tool around. I dont even use my radar in town. The highways around the state I agree are a crapshoot but if you pick your spots there are some very good high speed roads to be had.

It's a whole different story on 5 or 405 or anywhere else other than the city for that matter. I guarantee if you "speed your ass off" up and down 405 or 5 you'll be spending some time admiring the trash alongside the freeway while Mr officer runs your plates. I would say you're in the minority of people who get away with speeding for any length of time. |

There are lots of spots on the 5 between Tacoma and Seattle that cops sit on a regular basis. Same with the 16. Watch your speed around blind areas (corners, crests of hills ect...) and you should be ok.
Some spots to note: - Almost every day on the 16 right past the 6th ave on ramp before you hit Rainier Stadium. I am always seeing people pulled over right before the corner there. It is uphill and they sit at the top of it waiting for people to come over the crest and BAM! - On I-5 N right after you pass the dealerships on the right coming out of Tacoma. Cops like to sit around that corner. (Right before the BIG flashing billboard) - Before you start the downhil decent to South Center

My buddy whose dad's friend works in SPD told him that there are more cameras installed along I-5 so he better not speed. I think what he was trying to say is that they could dispatch officers anytime if they see something fishy from the camera.
However I've always try to cap my speed between 75-80 |

I average around 70-80 mph on the 5, but with a radar of course. After a few weeks of driving back and fourth, you should be able to pick and choose the 'safe zones' on the 5 where you can open up the throttle a little..
A few places to keep in mind, and recognize as 'danger zones', Federal way (State patrol loves to scout speeders from the carpool off-ramp), -Fife, cops from time to time, but makes it harder to know if they are there because of the faulty signals my radar picks up from the dealerships.. -South Tacoma through Downtown Tacoma exit, you don't wanna speed here.. -Also, def. don't speed on 405, Bellevue, they have cameras up, but I think they are just for when they are doing construction (still should be cautious, there are lots of cops at night). . But to answer your question on the 335i, its def. not a waste.. Like I said, there are plenty of places where you can do some 'spirited driving'.. Good luck on your job position and your move if you decide to take it. btw, here are some related threads.... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122279 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113800 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ght=low+flying |
