Auto Tranny slipping, don't know what to do
alright so I bought this 335i in November and it was all fine till about a month ago I changed the crankshaft position sensory hat needed replacing and finally I got to drive my car like normal about two days later after I changed it i started to have my tranny slip on me and sometimes it would throw me the transmission failure message and I'd have to pullover and restart my car
I took my car to BM and had the Transmission diagnostic done and they guy drove my car (ofcource when he drove it the car was fine) he checked the tranny fluid level, he checked for leaks, and checked if it was clean, he also told me he checked the torque converter. He told me everything was fine all he did was the tranny memory reset so it would learn my driving again, it was fine for about three weeks not giving me any major slips , then today it went back to throwing me on the side of the road and having to restart my car. I don't know what it could be, I need help Lucky today I got a video of it : Check out this video on YouTube: I'm 16 sorry I was cursing this has just been such a pain and I had made this video to send to my group chat |

Do you know if the Alpina B3 transmission flash was done to this car?

I'm not sure, but the guy that had this car me had a lot of stuff done to it from what I can tell, I know it was tuned and had at least an intake because covers were cracked while I was installing my dci , so maybe he did

If the Alpina flash was on, it would show D1-D6, S1-S6 so I don't think so. I'm guessing something happened during/after you messed with the crankshaft. What codes are coming up?

+1,
also check with previous owner, maybe he did change to some cheap fluid which is not compatible. I would just get the fluid from here http://www.thectsc.com/ (cheapest I found) and replace pan and fluid and see if it helps. Maybe previous owner did not replace the fluid at all and the car was modded and maybe even tracked, which would wear out fluid faster. |

those are my thoughts. If the previous owner had power mods and drove it hard, braking boosting or similar things it would be easy for the fluid to be toast, even easier if there are high miles on the original fluid

Yep, ATF should be changed every 60K miles. Mike Miller agrees

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...24&hg=24&fg=05 Therefore I bought this kit: http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...=187&parent=43 When I changed the pan, it took about 5.5 quarts to fill up. Price for the kit was around $239, right now I do not see how much it is. Last edited by litxus; 06-28-2013 at 03:59 PM.. |

the dealer I dont think is reliable, for them the tranny fluid is a lifetime fluid. Plus if they said its clean you know theyre FOS because the tranny fluid becomes dark and "dirty" looking basically right away with the ZF fluid (its still good fluid but supposedly it oxidizes to a dark color quickly? I dont know much about that), so looking at it and saying whether its clean or not is BS. |

From what I'm seeing it looks like 300ish. I'm thinking of doing it too.

It is not that difficult to do a DIY, but might be a bit of a challenge without a lift. If you cannot do a diy it is probably best to get the parts and get someone to do it. Dealerships charge you crazy money for it, about $800+ or so.
As for engine oil mine was black as crap when I bought it too, as per service history owner replaced at BMW "recommended" 15k intervals per service history, but he might have been slightly tuned and running more frequent oil changes. I did change oil as soon as I could and engine temps dropped by 20-30f in same temperature and driving. I would not go more than 6k on OEM oil. For transmission oil, they will BS you to no end about "lifetime" fluid, but it only became lifetime when "free maintenance" plan kicked in. If you plan to keep the car change it. |

I have a D, little different tranny but its still a ZF 6 spd. The whole kit with fluid, filter, drain plug, etc cost me about $285 shipped including tax. It says you have to call and ask the price for your trans but its probably about the same. Assuming its the OEM trans fluid you definitely should take that step and see if it does anything for you. $300+labor is a lot less than a new trans
