The CBS reading drops down according to how much fuel is consumed, nothing more. Thus motorway muchers will drop down much slower than city cars.

Really? Driving habits not included (although you could argue they are proportional to each other somewhat). What if you redline every time you cold start? Surely that would be awful for your oil and your OCI.

It would but that's how it works. As you say, fuel consumed would vary somewhat proportionally to how it's driven. The amount of fuel consumed is as good as indication as any.

I guess so, mine goes down pretty linear with actual mileage; I'm getting around 43mpg currently

I don't know about fuel, but mine goes down consistent with the mileage I drive.
However the oil consumption seems very high on mine 1000 miles / 1 litre.

That seems very high, I've never yet had to add oil. Is the car very low mileage?

Just had oil service done recently at BMW. 1000 miles later, bing add 1litre. Fine. 500 miles later, check, gone down to half again. Added 200ml, still at half. I suspect in the next <500 miles it will be down at top up level again. Has been consistent since getting it in Christmas. Seem pretty linear / accurate? Well consumption is high, but I mean when I check the oil reminder, it is going down, now saying in 13,000 miles. When it was reset, it said 15k so its pretty accurate. The brakes pads doesn't seem to budge though.

My CBS gives me 21000 miles between oil changes. I drive mainly motorway miles. I get around 45 - 47 MPG on motorway trips.
The car has done 143,000 miles now and used to burn about 0.5 - 1.0 litre of oil between changes but burns none now. Must be run in.

All parts have tolerances and some engines will naturally lose oil, luck of the draw, but they are not 'designed' to burn oil, that would be environmentaly irresponsible and pointless. An engine loses 95% of its oil loss on cold starts, so do a lot of cold running and you'll lose more, also poor running in will affect the engine for life. I've never had any BMW engine use any oil whatsover, but I owned them both from new and always run in and be very gentle till they're warm. My 330i and 335i both never lost a drop between services and over 100k miles between them. |

That's not the point. The point is doing lots of small trips on cold is bad for the engine and the oil. If you are driving 2 miles twice a day you are going to get poor fuel and oil consumption.

Does 20 miles count as short trips? I drive that to work and another 20 miles back home. Going down like mad my car.

Just get it serviced when it needs it?! Why do you worry about servicing? Thing's aren't meant to come out of the factory and just work forever. You can get oil changes done outside of the dealer for £60 odd. £60 to keep the most expensive part of the car in good nick. Money well spent.
