Do you let family members "borrow" or drive your E90?

So ive owned my first bmw for about a month now and im in LOVE. I really am so attached to my car it was hard to let my dad take the car to san jose (about a 200 mile round drip). My dad is kinda cheapo so I was very scared letting him use it. But shit hes my father, he owns a truck and didn't want to pay 140$ for gas.

Here are the things I went over with my pops. keep in mind I don't live with my parents (divorced) and they did not help me with this car;

Dad you HAVE to put chevron 91 in this car. If you have to cheap out and get cheap gas MAKE SURE ITS 91.

you gotta make sure it idles for a min, don't just start the car and go. (he likes to turn the motor over and throw it in drive. I hate that shit, I have to warm up my cars atleast 2-3mins.)

If your going to blast the AC , try to turn it on low before shutting the car off!!

as you can tell im a little anal!!! (ocd to be exact )

Do you let family members/friends/strangers borrow your car? What are some of your "rules"

The gf wants to drive mine but can't drive a manual. She now understands she must practice on a beater before driving mine

my dad co-signed my loan soooo yeah. haha. i don't live at home anymore so he rarely drives it but i trust him completely, he's always driven performance cars and taught me to drive stick. Plus lets me drive his new S6.

A select few friends I've let drive my cars but the occasion never really arises. My gf doesn't drive stick, her passat is auto, love driving that car esp in traffic

OP honestly you shouldn't let your car idle on cold startup, you should drive off... this has been covered a lot. i usually keep the revs under 3k until the temps start rising after a few minutes

Actually, I'm the same way as you about idling a car before driving off... but the correct way is technically suppose to be: start it, then slam it in to gear and start driving (gently till it warms up).

Modern cars are a lot smarter now a days even with the A/C, even with the A/C button on... I don't believe the A/C request is sent to the compressor when first powered on until a few seconds later.

Even if your dad cheaps out on the gas... the car has a knock sensor and a fuel sensor to determine what is being sprayed. So it will adjust the timing based on the fuel, it's always best to have the highest anti knock rating you can fine... but lower grades of gas will just have reduced performance levels automatically. I would just run down the gs before the next fill up (why not just pump a full tank for your old man before he heads off with the car??)

I let my GF drive my E46 but it always made me uneasy - riding with her in any car scares the shit out of me. So far I have been able to steer clear of any conversations about her driving the E90.

I'd let my mom or dad drive it no questions asked. Mom has a Golf R 6MT and Dad has an M6 6MT so they know what they are doing

It is just a car ... others including my oldest daughter drive it regularly.

They had their fair share of warnings though. Parking far, obsessionally avoid potholes & cracks, stop immediately if there is a funny CEL light or if temperature gets > 230 F.

Yes, my brother. Because if he ever takes it, it means I stay with his Range Rover sport. Not a bad trade.

Bought the car about a year now. Uncle hit some dude at stop light to tear the side of his car a few weeks back. Mom went right away and some dude hit her in her back. Both drive like they are mad people. Mom needed an oil change for her pathfinder on Saturday so I did it for her. Halfway draing the oil she comes out dressed to go somewhere. I said to myself oh shit... Ending of story, was the longest 30 mins of my life! And I now hide the the spare keys. Lol

Don't judge me.

I let people drive it all the time. Hell, I try to get people to drive it so I can drink when we go out. It's just a car, who cares? I've got insurance.

Garage List
family? yes, absolutely!

OP you have probably allowed some stranger mechanic to drive it, at the very least for a test drive. On this, I once found that my Garmin showed a max mph of 140+ after it had been in three shops one month (couldn't figure out who done it). Bet your Dad will be kinder.

anyone who I consider a friend I would trust driving my car, if they are my friend then they should respect my property enough to not damage or abuse it, I've had a handful of friends drive my car and they always stop before coming to bumps or driveways and ask me now to angle it since they know my car is lowered

Yes, that's why I have full coverage insurance. The car is for transportation (first) and fun (second). If you get irrational about a car, get a lesser car.
