Advice Needed on Requesting Goodwill Repair from BMW
Looking for some advice for a 335/X5 owner. This question, in particular, pertains to the X5, but the model isn't really important. Anyway...
I was driving the family (wife + 2 month old) home from visiting family this weekend when the water pump seized, shredded the accessory drive belt and shattered a pulley. We lost power steering and the car went into limp mode on the highway and, fortunately, we were able to safely pull over in a nearby rest stop to get towed. One day later we are all safely home thanks to Joe Self BMW in Wichita, who went above and beyond to get the car repaired. I bought the car 3 months ago from an independent dealer I just checked the service history and it shows that the water pump was replaced about 10k miles ago / less than 2 years ago. To me, the pump failing at this point is unacceptable. Any thoughts on how I proceed? Contact the Service Manager at the dealer that last replaced the pump? Contact BMW regional rep? BMW customer service? Thanks in advance. |

I believe all OE parts are covered by a two year warranty. If said part fails however, I don't think the labor is covered. At the very least I believe you shouldn't have to pay for the pump, but you may have to pay for the labor to replace it again.

Your not going to be able to get the factory to cover this. They only do goodwill repairs for original owners. I would talk to the shop that did the repair 10k ago. You can call BMW it never hurts to call. I did regarding a airbag seat sensor failure but the rep told me that since I was the second owner and the car was out of warranty they could not provide assistance.

Pump should be covered under the standard parts warranty. Labor will not be covered. Cars break. Goodwill only happens once you have generated some. This is one of the only benefits of having a relationship with a dealer. Relationship = buy cars from them. You mean nothing more and nothing less to them. It is a straight forward relationship that should not be confused with all their niceties.

Water pump is electric and not involved with any belt on the E70 X5. Power steering pumps fail. You are on your own.

They will not cover it. The only time the 2 year parts warranty covers anything is when you pay for it. If the water pump was replaced at 49,999 miles under factory warranty, then it fails a week later at 50,200 miles there is NO warranty. They would potentially goodwill but you bought it off some JoeShmo so probably will not.
