E92 Floaty
Hey guys, I have an E92 2011 N52 Msport, with 30k miles. As soon as I hit around 100 MPH it feels like my front end becomes "floaty" and even slow maneuvers cause lots of body roll, especially from the front end. Is this normal for these cars or is it a sign of bad shocks/struts? At slower speeds everything seems just fine.

DWS tires in particular will feel a bit "squishy" because they have a relatively soft sidewall. The deeper treads mean that the rubber tread blocks won't be as solid either. I'd give them some time to break in and the feel should improve.
I've had a couple sets of Conti DWS and they tend to feel that way at first. The tires will either break in or you'll get used to it. It shouldn't be anything to be concerned about.

It's the tires. I had the same problem when I swapped away from the original potenza run flats. The problem went away as soon as I got a set of Michelin Super Sports.

It entirely depends on what you're used to. Doesn't sound like a shock issue but you can check the compression and rebound by pushing the car down on each corner. The tire suggestion is a good one. That should help but I personally think the E92 has some vagueness or twitchiness inherent to it that I've noticed at highway and street speeds. Again it's all about what you're used to.

^ There always has to be one, Anyways...My SA at the dealer told me for whatever reason the e92 is more floaty on non rft then the e90. He said he had a person with an e92 go with michelin PS2 non rft and at "highway speed" was so loose and floaty they got rid of them for the rft's again. He said customers with e90's had no problem.

I haven't noticed this with DWS at that speed. It doesn't feel like my last car with stiff linear rate springs and Falken Azenies, but it doesn't have an excessive amount of roll from small steering inputs. What car/setup are you coming from? Go drive a mid-90s Eldorado and get it up to speed...that's floaty.

You need to install one of these for extra downforce on your front end...
If this is still not enough, you can try this extreme method... see below, results guaranteed!

+1 tyres. I have a E92 320d with Michelin PS3. It has at least 100 lbs less on the front axle with the 4 cylinder. Drove it on holiday thru germany, 120-130mph extended driving, 145 max (238 kph GPS). Felt very solid, but then also on superb road surfaces (and it has electrical assist steering which seems not to be appreciated by others - it's great to me)

I have the same Conti's and you get used to them. I don't think I have had at up to100 but at 80-90 it feels tight.
At first it felt like new sneakers, sort of like an extra layer of foam cushon and like the tire itself was a few inches "taller". Just describing what it felt like. Felt "floaty" but it also the ride improved. Now, it just feels real nice. Still glad I got ride of Runflats even after flat tire! Spare took me 5 min to put on with E60 kit. |
