Rear gear ratio?

Anyone know the stock rear-end ratio? Are there options from M?

Rear gear (M diff) ratio is 3.154:1 and ring gear diameter 220mm (E60 M5 was 3.615:1, ring gear diameter 215mm)
No addtl/different options available from BMW/M

Wow. That's a pretty tall gear ratio. I have to assume its for mileage and or traction. Can you imagine the beast with a little more gear?

I already chirp the rear tires with anything more than 1/4 throttle in 1st gear...it would be useless without drag radials. Speaking of which...I am not sure I would mess with drag radials as I am not sure how stout the M differential is for all out launches with sticky drag radials. I imagine the replacement differential would have quite a few digits involved...

Tom, you have a point. More gear for launch isn't required but a little more gear in 3rd - 6th would make a difference and drop the 60-150 mph times!

The M diff from the pics looks pretty stout but who knows where the weak link is and really sticky tires may find it! I suspect the half shafts are the weak link but again, idk. Thus the reason I'm thinking about Nitto 555Rs instead of the more race only oriented drag radials. I'm of the opinion that a little more traction will actually help prevent some of the wheel hop issues which really wreaks havoc on the rear components.

Any chance anyone know of how we can replace the rear differential with a 3.62 or even 3.91 for better 0 to 130 timing? Any company out there doing that or any older BMW car has the similar gear ratio for replacement or can we just replace the gear itself by keeping the housing in place?
