Active Steering version 2.0

Hi everyone,

I'm calling the current Active Steering option "v 2.0" because as many of you already know, BMW considerably revamped the system for the 2006 model year of vehicles.

Upon initial launch, the 1st "version" of active steering was very poorly received by everyone, professionals or otherwise.

However I've read a few articles in which it was stated that "BMW got it right this time".

What is the consensus on this?

I ask because it is in our nature to just dismiss something that was crap to begin with, and not pay attention to its "second coming", no matter how changed it is.

So it would be helpful to know what those who tried the 1st gen system and the current one think, as well as those that put a decent effort to really determine if its inferior to the regular setup in terms of feedback/feel/comfort.

Many thanks. :rocks:

I haven't had my car for very long, but so far I'm impressed with it. It really makes one handed u-turns very easy. On the twisties it seems to function very well during spirited driving. I have no complaints yet, and I'm glad to have it.

I don't have it now but I drove a friend's 335i w/ AS, and I liked it; very cool for the parking lots or when driving at slow speeds around turns. I will probably order AS on my next car.

I love it and would never get another BMW without it. It does take time to use to it but it is funny how fast the human condition adapts to feature like this so after a while the feel and response becomes perfectly intuitive. If you have a LSD the you will like it a lot more as you can correct the car so dam fast and it’s effortless.

It's *incredible*. Best option on my 335i, I may even trade all other options for this one. I won't by another car without it.

I still say it's garbage. Drives me nuts when I get in a car with it.

You won't find it on the M3 or M5. Think about that.

Because it wont fit... Thats why

I love active steering, wont buy a car without it. I will admit the first version was weird since it was always changing ratios while you were driving. But in my E90 its so seamless you dont even know its changing. Plus I track my car, and I find it very helpful and makes driving that much more fun.

The old version you would watch it change ratios right in the middle of a turn. Now it waits and doesnt change until you are in a straight line. Test drive one, believe what you think, not what everyone else tells you to believe

I have 14,000 miles on my 335i.. and I love AS. It was not hard to get used to and makes my combination of city and highway driving easy. I would not buy another BMW without it. I had a G35 before this car and the transition was easy.

Sorry guys, but the comments about this system being appropriate only for cars like a Camry are inappropriate.

Modern PORSCHES have variable steering ratio systems, Boxsters, Caymans, and even the GT3 included. I would hardly classify such cars along with a Cadillac/Camry...

I have not driven a 3 with AS, but I have driven a 5 w/ it. I kind of liked it. I doubt I would get it on my 3, but that decision is solely monetary. It seems those who have it love and those who don't bash it to justify why they didin't get it. I probably won't get it, but I thought it was a great feature.

haha this is funny! I have found that most people in this world fear change. As I have said many times, I love active steering, and I enjoy it on the track. Will never own a BMW without active steering.

also search and you will find tons of posts with hundreds of pages on responses. Or better yet drive one with it and without it and make a decision on your own. It just was not worth it for me and I really liked the regular steering.

And you probably never drove a car with it. When I was growing up we had rotary phones. I didn't want a touchtone phone. I hate technology.
