Spit and sputter question

Hi all,

I drive an 07 E90 MT with 20K miles. A few weeks ago, the car started spitting and sputtering during acceloration. Then one day, the check engine light came on, and I got a message that there was an engine malfunction, and that the car was in reduced power mode. I shut the car off for a few minutes, turned it back on, and the check light was gone.

I took the car to a BMW-owned dealer here in Germany. They replaced a coil wire and updated the progman to the latest version. While many other functions of my car are now better and prettier, it didn't seem to fix the engine hesitation when accelorating.

This problem occurs whether the engine is cold or hot. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Thanks.
