Shifting in DS
I got a e90 328i steptronic. I drive half of the time in DS. Shifting up is no problem (usually shift up at around 3-4 in city). However, when downshifting around city (stop signs, traffic light), I do it one by one slowing down rather than stopping then just going from 2. The problem is, when I am downshifting one by one slowing down, the car doesn't rev match and jerks roughly.
Is downshifting one by one slowing down not a good idea? How do you guys with step do it? |

Being new to steptronic myself, I don't really know how to rev matching it. I used to drive MT, and I'd hold the clutch and tap the gas pedal to do rev matching before downshifting. But if you're downshifting just to slow down the car, it's not good. That's what brakes are for. It's much cheaper and saves more time to replace the brake pads then to replace your tranny.

I don't mean USING downshifting to slow down the car. I mean downshifting when the car slows down with braking so that the gear is in parallel with appropriate speed.

The car will automatically downshift for you when you slow down. No need to downshift yourself everytime you come to a stop or slow down. The step won't allow you to damage the transmission. If it rev's too high, it will upshift for you. If rev's too low for the selected gear, it will downshift for you.

try downshifting without breaking, and see if it rev-matches.... when you downshift while braking, the car tries to rev-match the revs which the engine is at while you downshifted.... but since ur breaking, by the time the engine downshifts, the engine is no longer at the same rpms.....

I used to keep downshifting to stoplights and it would revmatch w/o the brakes. But then I learned here that is bad so I stopped and just let it downshift on its own around 900-1k.
