When is engine warmed up?

I've been hearing everyone say "floor it ONLY when the engine is fully warmed up". But how do I know when the engine is completely warmed up? Thank you guys

Isn't there a variable tach with the white bar that slowly eases towards the redline as the engine warms up? There's one on my dad's 6.

When your oil temperature is at normal running temp.. It takes a BMW about 5-10 miles to get the oil up to running temperature, outside temp has a lot to do with it also if its warm outside you will warm up quick.

Not on the regular 3's. But the bad thing about that is it goes by water temperature not oil temperature, so its basically worthless.

+1

In AZ the oil starts out at around 90 degrees. I'm absolutely religious about driving easy until the oil temp is midway between the 160 and 250 marks, around 205 degrees. I don't have any technical reason for doing this, and it's most certainly overly cautious. My typical operating temperature with an outside temp around 108 degrees F is 240 degrees F in normal driving.

5 min will warm water ish, but its the oil you need to worry about, 10 miles of easy driving at least

Right, parked outside all night with a -20F reading in the morning - it only needs a few minutes.

A far better answer would be the "right" oil temperature to insure minimal wear. Wear is the biggest problem with going WOT on a cold engine, although on some vehicles the software will slow you down until it reaches what the computer considers normal operating temperature.

I doubt that you're going to get a legitimate technical answer based on testing or data, on this forum. If it was that cold out I wouldn't take any chances until the oil temp needle started to move off 160 degrees at the very least. Normal operating temp for most people is 220-270 and if you wanted to be anal about it you could wait till then.

I'd rather be safe than sorry!

I had a E46 M3 which had the lighted Tach. I believe that this was based on oil temp rather than water temp. In the summer time it took a good 8 to 10 minutes to indicate that it was safe to go to redline. In the winter it took a good 15 mins of driving to get to a full lights-out condition.

On my current 545, it has the tach with a ribbon that moves to indicate a safe max RPM. Based on the way it moves, it probably is driven off of water temperature instead of oil.

On a 335 with a turbo engine, I definitely would not stand on it until the oil temp is over 210ºF which should be close to normal actual engine operating temperature.

I would presume that the engine is fully warmed up when it quits getting any warmer?? For mine that is 230-240F.

ive noticed that in my 335i you hear it in the exhaust, when it first starts up the exhaust is louder and dirty, but when it warms up it goes to that smooth deep sound.

That's probably the restrictor on the second pipe opening up as it warms up.

What happened to prince numbers 1-53?

Haven't you heard of the chicken-and-the-egg story???

The engine only warms-up after you "floor" the throttle.

M3 does water temp.. Here is a picture of my old M3, its 100F+ summer in AZ. Car had been siting over night. Notice the water temp is fine but the oil temp is cool and the car is not warmed up. yet to the light indicate it is.

eh pictures are not uploading right now.. But anyways to sum it up the warm up lights are worthless.

On the E9X's without an oil temp gauge, my rule of thumb is: if the computer thinks the oil is warm enough to give you an oil level reading, you're good to go. I doubt this is perfect, but it seems to be about 10 minutes into a trip, which seems reasonable.

If you have no oil gauge no matter what the outside temp is your car is fully warmed up.. I am only using this logic since when they tell me my engine blew up because I was going WOT when my engine was ice cold I will tell them how the heck am I supposed to know you should of put an oil temp gauge in my car... Come on BMW you should of known better...
