3-series doors lack the German "thud" when shut?
I was @ the dealer's today and I was completely blown away by the driving experience of the 335xi. BUT, all the 3 series cars in the showroom disappointed me with the sound of their doors closing. Usually, with all my German cars I expect a nice "thud" when I shut a door. With the 3 I got a more japanese/american "clank". What do you guys think?

My E92 door has plenty of thud.

I wouldn't call it a "clank" but my E90 definitely doesn't have the same sound/feel as my old E46 M3 when closing the door. When you closed the door on the M3 it was like closing a bank vault door, you don't get the same feel from the E90.

My e92 has the same thud as my old 330Ci but it just doesn't have the heavy feel. The doors also swing out way too easily with little effort. The e46 doors took more effort to swing them out which I liked because people wouldn't swing my doors out and hit other cars, walls, etc. IMO the e92 doors feel more like a Japanese car.

I test drove a Lexus IS350 the same day as an E90. One of the things I noticed was that the E90 had a much better "thud factor". So for me, the E90 certainly has the thud.

I agree they aren't as bank vault-ish as they used to be, but they aren't as bad as Japanese cars yet. If you're like I am, you have forgotten how flimsy the typical Honda and Toyota doors are.
I rode in a friend's Honda Pilot(?) or something recently. The doors felt like styrofoam after being used to the BMW. I said, "Dude, your car sucks. I drive a BMW. I'm so much cooler than you." No, I didn't actually say anything, but I was thinking that I forgot how light the doors are on those cars. FWIW, on my E90 the front doors feel good, but the back doors feel a little too light.

I would agree as well. My E46 sedan doors were slightly more solid than the e90. It's definitely easier to open/close these doors.

I think the answer is here, that the door panels are made of a kind of light weight steel, same as the hood:

It's probably due to BMW's efforts to keep weight and costs down. Heck, even the new S-class (as synonymous with a bank vault as a car ever will be) lacks a solid kachunk factor these days, so I think it's an overall automotive trend. I guess you could bolt some steel plates to the inside of your door panel if you really miss it that much.

yea, our last generation S class was very good about making a nice, thick, lush and creamy sounding cluu-thump when closing the doors. My e92 however....could be better on the thick and creamy sounds that should come form its doors....but whatever. My sisters E90 is a bit better and my E46 sucks becuase its a convertible so theres nothing to brace the windows when you close them....its doesnt sound deep and thick when you close its doors, just a sharp plink sound. I should go to the local rolls royce, bentley, or maybach dealers here and test out their doors!!! If phantom, flying spur, and maybach doors dont sound good, then nothing does.

Compared to my car that I had before, which was an Acura TL, there is a significant difference when I close the door. Definitely, the 3 has the luxurious "thud" for sure.
