F30 Drivetrain Malfunction - Related to BMS Stage 1 Tuning?
I noticed that I started getting drivetrain malfunction warnings when I floor the car. Once it hits around 6000 RPM, I get that notification and it gets into limp mode. I've read around about this problem and it seems like everybody has a different conclusion about it (BMW remains mum and says it's a solenoid issue). However I'm freaked out as I've been using stage 1 for a couple weeks now and have to bring the car in.
I obviously will remove the piggy back and have faith that the dealership won't find anything. My biggest concern is that my N20, first production build (2011 November) just doesn't have what it takes to use the BMS Level 1 or that I seriously fucked up the drivetrain somehow. http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=776020 was the thread i found except i wasn't going from automatic to manual when this happend, i was just flooring the car. |

Very hard to know if its the tune. We have seen such malfunctions on cars driven off the showroom floor. Just the luck of it sometimes.
Will be interesting to see what the dealer comes back with.

Have to ask the obvious here... have you removed the tune, and if so, is the check control message still occurring? Seems like it would be easy to test. If it only happens with the tune installed, you might be out of luck unless the dealership finds a bad injector or something.

Never heard of a car that was not intended to go WOT and needed programming to properly allow for it.

Ok, there are some engine coding parameters like turbo boost responsiveness available for adjustment, but should only be carried out by fully trained & authorised BMW service tech, who knows what he is doing. With so many variations, it's plausible, maybe.

I just tested the car without the BMS Stage 1 Tune and it revs just fine on standard (albeit much slower). I'm hoping I can figure this out soon, but it's not looking like happily ever after for me and tuning
going to bring it in anyway |

same thing happened to me a few thousand miles in. one day i was driving and got the malfunction light. stopped and shut car off. tried driving again and was in limp mode and very, very sluggish. Took off the bms and drove to the dealer. car seemed much better without the bms but still not 100%.
My issue was some faulty intake sensor or something along those lines. Dealer did not mention any codes other than the drivetrain malfunction (sensor) and the car was fixed in a day. |

I got a drivetrain malfunction error today
I had my tune for 2 to 3 months and everything was fine up until today. I was driving and when I floored it in sport+ mode to pass a truck and as soon as I passed him I got the drive train malfunction warning and the car went into limp mode and had to pull over...embarrassing level over 9000... I called the dealer and they suggested if I could make it in safely then drive it in instead of waiting for a tow. I took it into the dealer (with the tune still on) and they took a look at it. the dealer I go to is modding friendly so I wasn't concerned at all they spent almost 3 hours looking at the car and said they found nothing wrong with it but dont know why the car was in limp mode.. then they took out my bms and reset my batteru and viola...out of limp mode. test drove it for 5 to 10 minutes and nothing was wrong. then I drove back to the dealer to tell them that nothing is wrong and they helped me reinstall my bms and drove it out again. within 2 minutes drive train malfunction and went into limp mode again... so the dealer concluded it was tune causing the drive train malfunction they assured me there's absolutely nothing wrong with my car though I'll be interested to hear what your dealer finds |

Thanks for offering Mike!
The dealer got back to me and said they replaced the vacuum hose. i don't actually know what a vacuum hose is and everything i read online seems to relate to it helping the brake system. Do you guys know what's going on? |

Turbo cars have a variety of vacuum hoses, a leak of such a hose is a big pain on a modern car as it causes a vacuum leak and often a check engine light.

Umm, if you READ this thread, the BMS had nothing to do with a vacuum leak.

BMS's tunes are about as reliable as they come. These are very sophisticated cars, sometimes things go wrong. BMS is a solid company.
