Unfortunately you are right. The only way around it is to pull the wheels, mask it all off and paint with high temp black paint. BMW will not warranty that so don't waste your time and effort OP.

Correct, but let me add first you need to grind/sand that rusty stuff off (and get it all off as rust is a cancer) then prime with a galvanizing primer before painting with high temp paint.

Then that will only get you a year or two before the paint will likely begin to fail and rust will resume.

Only solution is to replace with aftermarket rotors made of better quality metals. Good luck with that!

True all across the board there. Primer would be self etching primer and sanding the rust off is a for sure must too. If done right it should last for awhile but I do agree it will fail at some point.Good points.

it is true though...
don't know about the states but in canada oil based car paint is prohibited due to the "effects on the environment". thats why if you look at your car's paint its dimpled now instead of nice and flat on pre 2005 cars.

The same happens down south (Texas) as well, just not as bad. I was told it was normal as well, and from reading the boards, it seems to be normal across all bimmers.

Unfortunate that they do not coat these pieces since a lot of rims have wide gaps between the spokes. Especially if they are selling $4-$7k rims mostly for looks.

This is how mine look without the rims. Some zinkpaste or grease would have been nice in the center. :-(

This happens to ALL CARS. All of them. Unless the hubs are aluminum. When exposed metal parts go through heat cycling, they attract moisture. This is normal. Find a real issue...

Thats true, but zinkpaste would slow the process down significantly. To leave it completly dry from the dealer is just sloppy imo.

Are you sure? I had two E90s and it wasn't at all noticeable and I checked out a 1-Series in a car park yesterday which was manufactured before mine and they were as clean as a whistle. My 1994 5-series had covered just under 200,000 miles when we parted company and they didn't look such a mess. Mine look bloody awful after 6,000 miles (much worse than the photo from the OP) as do all of the caliper fittings.

I think spending tens of thousands on what is supposed to be a prestigious car and seeing rusty hubs spoiling the look is a real issue. Perhaps symptomatic of keeping prices within reason by cutting back on the integrity of materials or finishing processes?

i agree, my 2012 f30 330d has done 7000miles though winter and the calipars and disc hubs look like they are 10 yrs old.
the quality of the parts are no better than ford/gm, the only solution would be to coat them with a good quality brake calipar paint when the car is new, but it should not necessary on a car costing this much! and i have to say that the paint quality in general is poor for a prestigious brand like BMW.

I am now in a 2013 330d as the first one was replaced by BMW UK due to paint issues, and the replacement car is not a lot better than the first one,
quite dissapointing really.

are the M-performance brake kit hubs aluminum? or would they too be subject to the same rust issue as the standard hub and rotors?

best option is zinc coating...

I do not know about other cities, but in Ottawa I could just take them at KVR and they can perform a zinc coating. Essentially $ 20/disc, it is a 2 day process and the discs are dipped in a liquid an electrical current used to coat them grey black or gold. Any zinc coated set I had never ever rusted and have over 100 000 kms winter driving to use as reference. Obviously I will not do this on a first set of discs, but the replacement, in advance; Zimmer rotors etc. The difference is astonishing. To the readers, a reminder: when I say that I never had zinc coated rust, I am talking daily driving in a nasty salty Canadian winter.

I addition, zinc coating has two other advantages:

1- Discs never rust on the inside, or between the front rotor plates, or from the inside out (happened to me once on a set that accidentally sat 8 hrs in a pool of water (torrential rain) and they crumbled from within in 5 months!)
2- Will never chip or crack like a paint, and not relative to rotor temperature.

What is mystifying is why does BMW not do this as standard... I suspect maybe on the higher end M performance..

All the best

Attached an old image of a Canadian made KVR zinc coated rotor. At the time the calipers had seized. Rotor had 50 000 kms and two winters- note- NO RUST on the hub. With the new calipers the rotor surface was again shiny.

If this is normal, then why didn't it happen to the 5 cars I have previously owned?

Hey! I loved my previous cars! They all had a black powder coating (I think) on the rotor hub to prevent this nonsense.
