Locking/unlocking doors
So i'm reading in the manual that i can set the car to flash lights only, play acoustic sound, light up hazzards and play acoustic sound. (page 20 in manual, page 22 in PDF)
However, I only have 2 options... flash lights and off. Is there a reason why i dont have other choices? I dont have comfort access. Thank you. |

you are absolutely correct. The alarm is required in order to produce the "chirp" after pressing the lock or unlock button. *DAMN IT... another accessory* http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=factory+alarm |

Make sure you shop around for the alarm should you choose to have a dealer provide the parts and do the install. I e-mailed a few dealers here in Toronto and the price ranged from CAD$522 to $960 plus tax.

Good point, I was just assuming that a dealer would be installing and activating it.

The alarm can be ordered from Tischer BMW for $230 (i think) shipped. Since there are a few very detailed DIYs (thanks guys) then i would install it myself.
I just hate that the dealer has to be involved to update the BCM software...GHEY! Kind of disappointing that BMW chose not to offer this as an option, i would have paid an extra 200-300 dollars or even 500 and it was included in CA. Oh well...a few peeps at work have a good point: no one cares anymore if a car alarm is going off. So, what is the benefit of the alarm; ease of mind, and an audible tone after pressing the lock button, and a blinking red clown nose? If you really need the peace of mind, then its a no brainer; do it. If it is the audible beep and blinking rudolph red nose then...hmm im trying to decide if i can justify ~$300 + 1-2 hour of my time. Flip of a coin i guess... |

For solid theft protection and more importantly, recovery, get a lo-jack. The insurance discount pays for it over time. If you have BMW assist, even lo-jack is unecessary.

Thieves will catch on to that pretty quick and turn it off. BMW Assist can track the car just as well as any GPS out there and the car does not have to be running.

For my new 335i, I was quoted $500US for hardware and installation (including the software update) by the dealer. That sounds pretty decent to me considering someone mentioned the SW update might be $150 by itself and the hardware goes for around $300 anyway...

Anybody consider an aftermarket alarm? I used to have a 790vx from Viper and it had a display that would tell you which panel of the car made the alarm go off. I'm sure everyone has seen them at a Best Buy or Tweeter/Sound Advice.
Thoughts? |

I've had other OEM alarms before on my Toyotas, and they really sucked -- I still had my aftermarket stereo and sub stolen while it was in my driveway a few years ago and the alarm never went off (it was still armed when I found things in the morning and I've moved since then).
The BMW alarm looks much more capable than other OEM alarms I've seen. Your mileage may vary, but I like the integration you get with the OEM alarm and as long as it does its job, I'm fine with that. I'm not sure I care too much about all the extra wizbang stuff you can get with some of the aftermarket alarms, but that's just me...
