Question out to the guys with a build from Aug 2012 to current
Just curious, looking at my details on bmwvin it says my car should have an N20 engine... reading up on it, an N20 should have an electric boost solenoid on top of the turbo but I do not see one on mine...
(pics will be inserted) just curious.. do the rest of the N20 (328) guys have an N20 or an N26? is there any way to officially confirm what it should have... either i've got an N26.. or I'm blind... Last edited by Spikey; 03-27-2013 at 08:33 PM.. |

Have a look at http://www.burgertuning.com/instruct...20_install.pdf
page 3 pic shows n20 vs n26 (i.e. no solenoid connector) I've got a n20 according to my bmwvin record (29th Oct 2012 build) Last edited by Beemed; 03-27-2013 at 08:08 AM.. Reason: page 3 rather than 4 |

Since around August, it's no longer on the N20 engine. It's electronically controlled, same as N26. As fas as I understand, Australia does not get the N26 engine. It's for places like California, with very strict emission laws. You and I have N20 engines.

Thanks for the replies so far guys...
I've updated the first post with a pic... can take more Just not sure where to look blue circle or red circle. I'm an idiot most of the time I must admit, so user error here wouldn't be too far from fact. I'm now looking at http://www.burgertuning.com/instruct...20_install.pdf .. it appears to be around the blue circle but I don't see anything there... |

Compare yours to mine:
As our photos are oriented, the old solenoid would be situated to the LEFT of the oil filler tube/cap. Note how both of ours just has the bolt holes. Look at the BLUE circle - just a little higher.

You are looking in the wrong spot. It's not your blue or red circle, but just below the red circle, the last item at the bottom with the 5-Pin electrical connector. That is your electronic waste gate. You can see the rod on it going to the turbo on the exhaust. Both N20 and N26 have this now. N26 has always had it and N20 started in 7/2012 production.
I live in California, but the N20 and N26 are both sold here and I am not sure how they are ordered. The N20 is considered a LEV or Low Emission Vehicle. My California F30 is the N20, LEV spec. My car is currently having the steering rack replaced, and the loaner I have has the N26 engine which is a SULEV or Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The emission sticker under the hood says N20 or N26 after an emission code. The other way to tell if you have the N26 is if there is a label under the hood that says the radiator is emission reducing. It has a catalyst on it to convert ozone to oxygen. Another way is to look at the engine number stamped on the front of the block, it will say N26 or N20 then the engine serial number.

If you haven't downloaded the PDF from BMS, best to do so as there are close up photos showing EXACTLY where to connect. Also the connectors won't fit the wrong sized/shaped connectors - obviously. If you see the bolt holes as per my photo, then move onto the next connector on the other side of the engine.
