Questions about used 1 series

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a new X3 about 6 months ago and am loving being part of the BMW family! My wife is now wanting to join the family herself.

We have looked at used 3 series and 1 series and she seems quite keen on a 1 series. In our price bracket we are looking at most likely a 120i or 120d and a 2008-2010. Most of her driving would be short trips around town and to appointments. This is why I would probably lean toward petrol engine as I think it would be easier on the motor than on the diesel. Thoughts?

Just wanting to hear some feedback on reviews and things to look/look out for with a used one as I don't know much about the 1 series. I have been reading through many posts on here but just not finding a lot of information to help me in our search.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd definitely go petrol for those short trips around town. I got a 120i and I love mine. BMW's aren't really known for fuel economy and mine averages about 9L/100km.

Mine's been problem free so can't help you with issues. Rear visibility is a bit poor for shorties like me but you get used to it. Oh and the sound system is a bit ordinary...going to upgrade that.

Not a lot of Aus 1ers have idrive when I was looking for mine. If that's a must it's going to be harder to find though the newer you go the better your chances.

hope that helps.

I would likely go for the diesel in this case. Low end torque to make her driving around town easy and the fuel economy is excellent.

Okay I lied, so been to the dealer today and I've got oil leaks. Petrol BMWs ALL get oil leaks >_>

Anyway, apparently the N47 diesel engine has timing chain and clutch issues and generally seems more problem prone on the forums. Test out both and see which she prefers.

Good to know. The one thing I was told to be aware of were oil leaks. Does this only apply to the petrol engine? Any more advice from people. Thanks again
