Winter 20" vs 19" update

I have read the winter wheel posts in here, there are some things I am not clear about winter wheel/tire choices. The way I see it:

19" pros:
1-Can go with narrower tire (255), which ought to be better for winter
2-With the OEM set the tire/wheel protection plan would cover the summer as well as winter sets
3-Less expenses in tires since 19" should last more than 20"

19" cons:
1-Can't rotate even with a square tire setup without taking the tires off the rims since the offset on the rear OEM is different
2-No aftermarket options

20" pros:
1-Several aftermarket wheel options available, including tested ones in Tirerack
2-On this I am not sure, but can you rotate the rears to the front, or is there an offset difference on the 20" as well that prevents you from doing so?

20" cons:
1-Less durable and more expensive tires
2-Have to go 265 and that is not as good for snow than 19" at 255
3-With a non OEM set, the warranty would not cover a winter set

So the tire and wheel warranty is good for both summer and winters if they are ome and purchase from authorized dealership? My local dealer said they are not sure about the coverage of the winter set. I have coverage on my original 20" set though.

^ In Canada, the warranty will cover both winter & summer, as long as they are oem sets.

CharlieBrown in this thread, pages 6-7, states he confirmed the warranty covered them:

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthr...=723038&page=6

But I have seen others state their dealer has expressed uncertainty. I suspect it is indeed covered, but that some dealers may not be knowledgeable about it, so I would tread carefully.

You could get the OEM 19" winter set in a true square setup and just run a 10mm spacer in the rear. The offset is 25R 32F. The 10mm spacer would make it 32F 22R

It would require ordering 4 front wheels with the ET32 offset.

I kind of wish I had done this. I have the 408M staggered offset setup.

Thank you, good solution, but I wonder if that would void the protection plan if you are not strictly sticking to OEM recs, at least for the wheels that have the spacers?

^^^ This is the best solution. I did similar for winter on the X5M and have 19" square OEM 19's. Just be sure to use quality spacers that are fully machined and don't rely on the as-cast surfaces, bores or plugs. The down side is special +10mm lugs. I use BBS 20's with an 18mm spacer in the rear for a square summer set-up.

Or ... you could forego the spacers and simply have the snows tucked in another 3/8" but I don't recommend this. 255 width rubber would be best but your other ideas are workable too.

Other than for rotating the tires and getting full use of the rubber, is there any other reason to run a square set up? I plan to run a 255 square set up on my staggered OEM 19s (dismounting them to rotate after two seasons)

I would think that 255 on the 19" non winter/staggered rims would result in the rear tire being stretched more than the front, so you would lose a bit of winter performance, I presume you have an aftermarket 20" set for summer? All things considered, I am still leaning towards the 20" OEM for summer and get the 408m's OEM's for winter, appears to be the best setup available for winter and covered by the protection plan if I get it. Probably would keep the rears for two seasons and the front ones for three rather than rotate. I would think the Pirelli's Sottozeros would start losing some winter performance after 12-15k miles, and after this past New England winter, I want to be safe.

The Macht Schnell spacer kit included the extended lug bolts. Very light and very high quality.

Available at IND or EAS.

Yea I ordered Modulare B18s with 20" Michelin PSS for summer. Im in the north east too so figured I would just use the stock 19s to run winters. I actually already found buyers for my 19" Michelins. Originally I wanted to get the 20's, but then figured Id prefer the 19's for winter use.

My dealer did confirm my 408m setup is covered under my wheel/tire warranty. The 408m with the Pirelli Sottozeros look good, ride well and most importantly get plenty of traction in the snow and slush. They are also reasonably priced. I expect to get 3 winter seasons out of my Pirellis without rotating and that's good enough for me from a value perspective.

How many miles do you think you can put on the rear ones before you start losing winter weather performance? I ask because it seems three seasons for the rears may be too much.

Assuming I use the tires four months a year at 1000 miles per month, I'm expecting 12,000 miles out of the tires.

I don't try and squeeze mileage out of tires. When they get to the halfway point I start paying attention. At the first sign of wear past half tread wear and I get new tires. I have this mentality from the way I treat tires on my motorcycles. It's just not worth the risk to ride around on a bike or a car in the winter with anything but good tires.

I don't understand why you wouldn't rotate the winter tires. Every 2 years. You will double the life expectancy for $35 a year.

For $35 I would. Where can I get 4 tires pulled of the rims, remounted and balanced and put back on the car for $35?
